Question for all the wood workers on here.
What is the best tool for making square holes for joinery? I see drill presses with the square drill bits. Are those specific for squares holes? Or can you buy a drill pressure that can handle that task as well?

My buddy said use these: www.amazon.com/ATOPLEE-Woodworker-Square-Mortising-Chisel/dp/B07TT3L7RBHe said they have to be razor sharp to work without splintering the surface.

how many holes do you want to make? you can buy a dedicated mortiser, but they are expensive and only do 1 thing. you can buy a drill press attachment to mortise. I find it easy to just use my route to make a groove and chisel the ends square. if making just a hole you can drill a hole and use a mortise bit like a chisel. there are several ways to do it depending on how many and how often you plan to do it.

I'm not really sure how many I'd make. I have always wanted a drill press so, I'll probably go that route.
Thanks for this info!

Not what you asked for but a dove tail jig is not horrible expensive if your building drawers and things like that biscuits are also cheeper if your building faces or frames But that maybe not what your looking to do

For the record .... You can't drill a square hole. A square bit in a drill still makes a round hole.

I don't like the way the drill press post is deflecting when he's pushing down on the bit. The slot can't be 100% vertical.

I noticed that. I don't really know how often I'd use a mortise and tenon joint but, I was hoping to avoid getting a mortise press. Not cheap to purchase.
I'll worry more about when I actually need one. That'll be future me's problem. Lol!

I don't like the way the drill press post is deflecting when he's pushing down on the bit. The slot can't be 100% vertical. Never send a boy to do a mans job. Way to wimpy of a drill press. I have one marketed as GRIP for Grand Rapids Industrial Products. It has a #2 Morse Taper in the spindle. TIR is better than some Knee Mills I have ran. It is much larger than that toy and I can see more ridged too. Only cost me about $149 about 15 years ago. Probably $1490 today.

I am looking at a different floor drill press to replace the crapsman floor model that I have now. Maybe this one? I'm open to suggestions though. www.grizzly.com/products/grizzly-20-floor-drill-press/g7948

I have never ran a Grizzly tool. My old boss had a couple of Grizzly tools and spoke very high of them. That looks like a stout drill. I just took a quick look at the specs. I did not see column OD/ID listed most are made of tube and a thicker wall will make a more ridged column. Knowing that would help with comparisons to other machines. Overall weight of machines is also good to compare.

I have an attachment for a drill press. it works well but takes some tinkering. as others have stated a good drill press is not a suggestion but a requirement. it's a tool you will use forever so you might as well get a good one.
