Greetings from a guy who may possibly be headed to Indiana this summer. My wife and I currently live in SW Montana, but are looking at the possibility of selling and moving closer to family. I’ve been looking for generalized information on the hunting and fishing out there, and came across this site. Montana is nice, but quite frankly the winter is getting old…like us. I spent 4 hours on a 40hp tractor yesterday digging a neighbor out of the snow, and this evening the wind is howling, so it’ll probably all drift back in again.
A little background on me: I’m a 64 year old retired fireman. I was born, raised, and retired from California (state fire department) and escaped the madness a few years ago. I’ve always been a big waterfowl hunter, and when we left CA we went to NE South Dakota. I loved it there, but circumstances necessitated a move, and we ended up in Montana. Here big game is king, and locally the duck and goose hunting is minimal at best. I can’t complain too much because this fall I filled the freezers with an antelope, an elk, and 6 whitetails, which will be our yearly meat supply. The trout fishing here is great, but I don’t care if I ever see another trout on a plate: I would MUCH rather have bass, catfish, or crappie. My wife and I both play bluegrass music, and here locally there is zip, but I believe there’s a lot more opportunity for picking out there.
Anyway, I’d love to talk with folks about what’s available hunting and fishing wise in Indiana. The family we have out that way is in Columbus, so we’d be within an hour of that, in all likelihood. I’ll explore the boards here, and hopefully make a contact or two.
Take care.

Welcome aboard. I’m in Nashville, so not far from Columbus at all. That’s where we usually do all our shopping and it’s a 30 minute drive for us to get there. There’s plenty of public land within an hour to hunt and there’s also quite a bit of water to fish for all the species you mentioned. We’ve fished lake Monroe for quite a long time and there’s plenty of fish to go around in there. Good luck in your search and I hope you find what you’re looking for.

I'm not laboring under the conception of great duck hunting, but it looks like there's a good number of deer and fish.

Upside is if we go there we'd have a house that would be paid for, so my wife said I could disappear for duck season wherever I needed to go. I'm not sure exactly how to take that.

Indiana is not a bad place to live. As someone who goes out west every year though, the public land hunting here is not even remotely close to what you have in Montana. You probably have more public land within a 15 minute drive than we have in the entire state, a small fraction of the hunters, and a longer season to hunt.
I know that I would not consider leaving Montana for anywhere in the midwest, but then again I've never actually lived there, just visited. You know what they say about the grass being greener on the other side, all that.

Welcome and good luck on your possible moving adventures. Buy a farm, so you can set it up per your likings.

Nice, you will like it there and this board is a great place to meet and learn about everything. I'm currently in Ca., but can not wait until I get the chance to move back home again. I get back for hunting season and a couple times throughout the year to visit family and fish some with my Pops Welcome to Indiana...SF Woody

Columbus is a great town. I lived there for 5 years but had to move back to the west side of Indy due to my employment changing. I really enjoyed Columbus.
