It gets weirder...www.fortwayne.com/mld/journalgazette/sports/13964480.htmOne whopper that might have been a record setter appears to have gotten away. The hunter who is credited with killing it, Brian Ferguson of Morgantown, has declined to be interviewed, changed phone numbers and reportedly is no longer in possession of the antlers. Ferguson killed the deer during the shotgun season and a photograph of his father with the deer was circulated widely on Internet hunting message boards. Bogucki said he was told it had a preliminary score of 220, and even with deductions for minor deformities it could have topped 200 and been a state record. Bacon and Bogucki said they were told Ferguson traded the antlers for an all-terrain vehicle and a pickup truck.“We don’t know who got the rack,” Bogucki said. “It could still be measured and still be a record, only it would have a different owner. “It was impressive, no doubt.”

Something definitely seems fishy. I remember reading a statement by an IDHA official that he had personally been in contact with the family, helping to direct them on how to handle this situation. Which tells me that this family knew how much this deer could be worth. Now they supposedly trade it for an ATV and a truck? Even if this kid/family didn't want any press etc, I would think they could have sold the antlers for more than a pick up and an ATV. Not a very smart trade considering neither will be worth a thing in a couple years. Very odd.

Nothing fishy at all. Legal kill, guy traded what it was worth to HIM. End of story. Who are we to say what he SHOULD have gotten for it? Good for him. Got a truck and an ATV. Valuable and useful items. Solohunter

Who cares, I'd take every penny I could get from a deer like that. Get a reproduction of the antlers and call it good. Without knowing anything for sure, why would everyone assume this guy got taken to the cleaners. Even better I saw on the other site some thought he is hiding something because he didn't sell his story. Get a life.

You are 110% right duff..
It is HIS deer and he can do with it what he wants.
Register it.
Don't register it.
Sell it
Trade it
Give it away
Throw it away
Cut it up and make knife handles
Use it for a boat anchor
Fed it to the squirrels
Use it for rattling
etc
etc
etc.
He can still sell his story although there is probably not much af a story to tell. A 19 year old kid went deer hunting and killed a whopper. End of story..
Too dang many folks telling him that he should go with the antler worship craze.

I dont know, maybe its just me. If I shot a deer like that you could be sure that it would have MY picture with the buck and not with my DAD. That'd be like taking Pam Anderson (or insert your favorite hotty) to the prom and letting your dad get his picture taken with her. Ha ha too funny. Story sounds fishy for sure. But hey, what do I really care. His deer...right?/!!

No picture needed but I bet you could sell the story someplace ;D

Anyone know any good antler recipes? Yep... Take the head and horns to your favorite taxidermist. Wait a few months. Pick it up. Hang it on your wall. Enjoy looking at it and the memories that go along with it. Perfect recipe EVERYTIME!

You know...
Maybe this 19 year old kid is smarter than some folks give him credit for.
Maybe after he was deluged with the antler worshipping buzzards constantly circling saying:
Can we see the deer?
Can I get a picture of it?
Can I score it?
No, let me score it.
Do you want to sell it?
Can I write the story for you?
Can I use it in a seminar?
Will you endorse my product?
Then the accusations that it wasn't legal.
....he just said to heck with it. I want these guys off of my back and he...
1) Said he traded it and didn't.
2) He really did trade it, because a set of antlers doesn't mean that much to him. Believe it or not some people don't care that much about them. His family was more impressed with the weight of the buck than the antlers.
Big antlers make some people do some very strange things..

The guy that shot this deer could have cared less if it was a spike or a 180 class deer. He hunts for food, not fame.

Big antlers make some people do some very strange things.. That is very true. I see cases like this all the time, where hunters simply dont care about the meat. We get rotten deer in, tell them the deer is rotten, and all they want to know is if they can still get a headmount or not

Sounds like wanton waste of the animal.....last time I checked, that is against state law to let them go bad.

Never said this deer was illegal, poached, etc. No reason to believe it was anything but legal. Nonetheless, the story is still fishy.
