First, I have to admit that I screwed up by not giving this matter my attention before Friday, the day before the Youth Deer Season.
My failure on this has turned into a crazy weekend with a disappointed grandson.
Apparently, I had already purchased the limit of 3 apprentice licenses for him. Access Indiana shows a record of my historical licenses. It does not show any record of his licenses. I believe that 3 years ago, on a last minute decision, I purchased an apprentice license as I took him out just to introduce him to the sport. I just didn't recall.
When I went to the Access Indiana site, the only thing that pops up when I go to purchase his license is the red banner, "Sorry, but there are currently no licenses that you can purchase at this time." I can only assume that I had truly purchased the 3 apprentice license limit?!
So Saturday, we spent the day completing the Hunter Ed online course. I walked through the process with him. As a sidebar, I will add here that regardless of the website note that most students complete the course in a few hours...NOT even close.
I knew from all the OSHA, Safety, IDEM, etc. courses that I have to take...never believe that BULL!
I told my grandson to allow the whole day just to get him in the right frame of mind. Matter of fact once you register, the site gives you the prompt that Indiana requires the "timed" course to take 4-6 hours. Each unit has a countdown timer so you cannot leap ahead, even if you try.
We completed the course, Including his 100% on the final exam in 8 hours and 5 minutes.
Mind you, he did the course. I was there for support and to keep him rolling. He actually answered the questions quicker and more accurately than me. Most of you know that this is many times the case with these youngsters.
Once we got his certificate, we tried to register him at Access Indiana but it gave us the error code 500 and the note, "We are unable to authenticate you based on your account information. You may need to contact your application administrator to resolve this issue." I'm guessing that we got flagged because of his age, 14 yrs old. And I know from the Access Indiana site that I purchased his previous licenses because he was under 18 yrs old.
So, I go back to the Access Indiana site and try to purchase his Youth License and I get the same red flag banner as before.
I have no issue with Hunters Ed. I am a huge proponent, having taken the physical on location course at Danville with my son years ago.
But, I will say for sure, this Access Indiana BS is a totally convoluted system regarding this Apprentice to Youth License process. I guess I'll try to reach out on the Hunter Ed and Access Indiana phone numbers for help on Monday.
At this point, the weekend is shot. I get it and I own it! I totally admit that I screwed up!
But, now that we've done all we can do, I'm looking for any input y'all may have to come to a resolution here.

No problem for us, but not the hurry up offense you guys went thru.
Sorry to hear this. Nothing worse than the anticipation of going, then the big let down for him.
Hopefully you will be able to take him out some during the rest of the season. Fingers crossed for you guys!

Access Indiana is a joke...IMO for hunting needs!
BTW....does he need a license if hunting your own land? I forget the regs for this.

Bum deal.. I am not a fan of the apprentice license or the hunter ed program. It is just adding more hoops and pitfalls than value imo. An unpopular one at that, I get it and understand rules are rules.
I think it is another feelgood rule that was promoted to save the sport but in reality it adds hurdles to those with the most hurdles in front of them. Pretty sure if it was up to my parents to get me to a class on a Saturday for hunters ed I probably wouldn't have been hunting as early as I was.
I also have had my share of problems in the online system. For the longest time I couldn't even log in because a dumb move on my part used a work based email...when I changed jobs I could no longer access the system to change it. All communication was going to a dead email. I had to call headquarters couple years in a row. Based on last few years it seems they have it corrected.

I have been round and round with the DNR and it comes down to a very gray area. As a landowner and/or lessee of land I own and lease there is no question. In black and white, I’m legal as exempt. To the definition of farmland and farming, the gray area begins. So, I just choose to err on the side of caution. |

Does it let you get in and add his hunter Ed number to his profile, which would be under you. You will still have to act as him to buy licenses, but if you’ve already done that step then I don’t know what the heck is going on and that just sucks.

That was it and it took his number I just missed the slot! Perfect just bought his license and we’re good to go for the season. He’s already at a golf outing today so we’re out for this weekend but I don’t really care I’m so happy right now to have this taken care of and I greatly appreciate it buddy! I find it ridiculous that adults in Indiana can carry a concealed firearm with no training and no license, but hunters have to take hunter ed to hunt a squirrel.
Makes zero sense to me...

Anyone know what the failure rate is for the H.E. test? Do the folks who fail have to retake the entire course or just retest? I know other opinions are 100% different than mine. That is fine. I have felt this way since I took it to hunt in MI. The in person course at least had real people to talk to...I am sure the on line version is a joke. |

[/quote] You keep re-taking with assistance until you pass. Most HE classes start with the instructor saying “ Everyone will pass today”….. If your smart enough to open your mouth to eat you will pass! IMO Obviously HE holds people back or there wouldn’t be a need for a apprentice License |
