Have been down with Covid so got some trapping supplies ordered and am prepping a few new traps to add to the MB 550s that I run. I went with MB Alphas and ordered a dozen to check out before I bought any more. They appear to be really well built similar to the 550s with wider jaw spread and a larger Dogless pan and should work well on the line this fall. I will be picking up another dozen from a friend in Michigan next week sometime. Anyone on here run them on their line yet? I am Hoping to start a trapping thread this year with pics of each Coyote I catch and what type of set was used.

Ditto on the trapping thread. I have some MB550's and have some 'yotes running around here that I want to thin. Never did much dry land trapping though. The land here is mostly woods with a few food plots.
Is there a way to make a scent post set in the middle of a food plot? Here's the layout. Food plot is about 90 yds long by 40 yds wide. The long side is going East to West. I get pictures of coyotes going thru the center of the food plot but never by the edges. If there is a taller clump of anything there I get pictures of them hiking their leg on it, but there is no way to ensure that they will only come from 2 directions and not whizz on the backside of it. Say if I put a post in the center, they can access it from all 360 degrees. Very sandy soil, some call it sugar sand so I think I have to double stake the traps with at least 24" disposable stakes.
Suggestions?

Find a rock or other object in the area that is there naturally and use it as a backer. I like to do this and drill a small hole going in at a 45 degree angle and place the rock so the hole is right at the edge of the rock. put a little lure on the edge of the mouse hole and a little urine on the rock. Bed the trap with the pan six or so inches from the hole. I use Wolf Fang earth anchors and have some that are longer for use in sandy soil. You know they are there so I would have at least two sets in the area. Make sure you bed the trap rock solid before covering. Hoosier Trappers Supply has a lot of good videos on there site that show some real simple sets in good detail. The lure makes them work the set and the rock is the backing. I have other sets that I use with pretty good success. Learn 3 or 4 good variations of some basic sets and there are very few Coyotes you cant catch. Glad that there is some interest in my idea I love to trap and to show others how I do it.

Since I am confined at home Ill add to my post. Another variation of this set is made by finding a large clump of vegetation that stands out from the surrounding vegetation and use it as a backer. A small dirt hole at the base and lure and urine the same way with the trap bedded in front of the dirt hole. I wish I could get out and take a couple of pictures to post of how these locations look. Maybe tomorrow I will be able to do that and it will help. Also remember to try and place sets so that prevailing wind will carry the lure into the coyotes expected travel path. If you find sign such as scat set on that location. But with your trailcam you already know they are coming through.

That gives you an idea of what the food plot looks like. The camera is facing about 1:00 pm, 12:00 is due North. The critters are in the middle of the food plot, traveling East. I'm not worried about catching the collared coyotes, I've gone around to the neighbors within 1/2 mile radius and nobody knows who they belong to.

I would put a couple of simple dirt holes at each end of the plot find a football sized rock or piece of firewood as a backer. As far as lure or bait keep it simple. A chunk of old meat or some prepared bait down the hole and get a couple of 1 oz lures from Hoosier Trappers supply. Coyote carnage and Vixen Elixir are my favorites and their Top Dog Predator Bait is awesome. Keep you sets clean and simple and I have no doubt yo can catch that Coyote.

Been busy for a few days helping cover The City of Elwood after their Officer was Shot and Killed last week so havent been on the site. I am definitely going to start a thread sometime in November on Coyote and nest raider trapping. Its one of my favorite things to do and I enjoy showing others how I go about it. Not an expert but I catch quite a few each year.
