Colors - What do Deer See? www.qdma.com/articles/details.asp?id=48These pictures are from another site and gives an example of how deer see hunter orange, but it is a pretty good example of what deer see. The first picture is "normal" color as we see it. The second picture is how deer see color. They have no receptors in their eyes that are triggered by the color red, so as colors move from yellow through orange to red, the "color" disappears and becomes black. But deer see blue and green very well, and see yellow fairly well.

Looks like they can see MULLETS too! ;D No wonder I keep getting busted ... ;D This certainly underscores the importance of breakup . I was surprised to see that they see orange as nearly black , I would have thought that they would see it as either medium grey or possibly a lighter shade . I just bought a blaze camo parka for public land hunts , looks like I'll need to hide more .

The only thing horrible about this picture is I'm not the dude holding the rifle. Bloody pants/hands equal successful hunt! That's a nice buck.

I don't see what the big deal is with the bloody pants. I always end up with some blood on me too.

I agree that deer can see at least partial color. I don't know if orage looks black to deer or not, but they can see it, that's for sure. Years of hunting almost exclusively on the ground taughtr me that. I think people forget that what makes blaze orange and other "Neon" colors pop the way they do is the ultraviolet brighteners put in the dyes. Our eyes are picking up the ultra-violet enhancing properties of these dyes. Deer, as primarily crepuscular, even nocturnal beasts, have eyes that are far more sensitive to UV brighteners than us. Imagine how that blaze orage looks like to them! That is why it is critical to never wash your clothes with regular detergent!
I remember being in a Novelty store in a mall once when I was wearing a camo hunting shirt jacket during the off season. I stepped over to a dark corner where a black light desplay was, and all pf my clothes glowed with an errie light---except the jacket.

That's the new urban camo pattern "Low Five". The mullet is standard issue with this outfit. It is commonly seen on the opening day of firearms season only.
