Had a good trip but it was a tough one with this Covid test and the boarder and Christmas things got a bit screwed up.
It started out we were going to head north on Sunday right after Christmas but Steve had family things and couldn’t do it so we pushed it to Monday but because of the holidays the testing labs were closed. So myself Steve and his wife made a appointment for Monday Am I got my test back quick but Steve’s was going to take at least 4 hours that would put us at the cabin after dark not all that fun trying to sled in all your food gear that and a few other things we decided I’d be at his house early on tues.
So I bailed out of bed early and hit the road as I get close to Steve’s house my phone rings it’s Steve I’m thinking he’s just looking for an ETA Well he just figured out they had taken the wrong test and had to go back and get the PCR test. So I told him I was going to stop somewhere eat breakfast and be at his house a bit later not ideal but with some luck we’d still be in by dark. About 9 AM he calls again the lab were they go no longer does the PCR test in house they send it out and it will It will be 24 to 48 hrs before he knows. They only do the rapid test in house he was going to call around and see if he could find someone that could but he could not so I said see ya I can’t wait I’ve only got 72 hours before I can’t go and 30 of them are used up already. By now it’s 10 AM I’ve still got a six hr drive plus stop and get new fishing tags and bait cross the border and hopefully be unloaded and headed to the cabin by 4 it gets dark about 5 this time of year.
I hit the road at full speed about 45 minutes into the drive I looked down the check engine lights on about now I’m just about ready to do a 180 and go home and forget this trip I’ve had about all I can take so I pull over check under the hood not that I could do anything anyway but thought I’d look anyway. I figured it was just a sensor the gauges all looked good truck ran fine but we’re I was headed you don’t chance it.
So I got on the net looked up Chevy dealers and off I went they were great they scanned it and said it must of just been a freak trip nothing was showing up and told me hit the road every thing should be fine.
But I knew at best I might get in and be able to bust a trail in some daylight so off I went the rest of the drive went fine I hit the end of the logging road were we park and go in at right before dark look over and a tree had fallen across it and I can’t get around it believe me I said many choice words about that time. So I parked the truck and dug out the chainsaw and cut the tree out of the way with my headlights then shoveled enough snow out of the way so I could park lucky for me they didn’t have much snow yet.

This is one of the reasons I hate getting in late you have to shovel out the generator get it going BTW they don’t start easy when it’s ten outside even though it’s only 6:30 or so it takes dang near 12 hours or more to get this place up to 68 or so I’ve only got a wood stove and this is a cabin not really insulated all that good cheeper windows and everything is ten degrees the walls ceiling cabinets beds chairs and a rock wall behind the stove

I finally get everything unpacked it takes a bit of time even with just me all your food water cooking oil has to be brought in during the winter I’ve got the wood stove burning like crazy time to hit a Crown and Coke and watch a movie that I’ve seen 5 times already I’m really surprised that a DVD player and TV work when it’s that cold or even last they stay year around. I can’t catch any TV channels don’t have cell service so no net and the only radio I get is CBC and a lot that’s in French

I told Steve I’d like to be on the road by 6 Am Sunday so I could get home at a reasonable time I was going to work Monday and didn’t want to be half the night unloading the trailer said he’d be over about 530 AM to load the sleds up and head to the truck should be easy already had trail busted trucks shoveled Saturday evening out forgot to mention we got about 10 inch’s of snow since I arrived.

Got up about 430 Am Sunday to load up the cooler and make coffee for the road and get ready to go I had filled the generator with gas before I went to bed so I had lights when I woke up to load I went outside to to start the snowmobile and let it warm up about about 5 or so only to find out the battery had gone dead or it was to cold so needless to say I grabbed the pull rope and pulled and pulled I can tell you it’s not easy pulling 800 cc over when it’s bitter cold outside again with the choice words. I decided to go get the generator and battery charger it has a engine start boost setting on it I no more than walked ten feet to the shed and I heard the generator start missing guess what happens next it runs out of gas now I’m thinking not again I can’t take it. About that time I hear Steve coming across the lake he had the same problem but his sled started. We got my sled running got the truck loaded and was on my way home by 6:15 I honestly was surprised my truck even started when I saw just how cold it was. Steve and his wife are staying till Tuesday hopefully he gets out

I remember being in N. Wi when they had a cold snap like that. We were up there to go sledding. Years ago. My car started (I had a heater in the lower radiator hose that I plugged in to keep the motor warm), but we had to run to town and get charcoal to build a fire on aluminum foil under a buddy's jeep - it wouldn't start, the oil was THICK. We finally got it started and went sledding but dang, it was cold.
Do you take extra gas for the truck? Or is there a gas station nearby?

Now the big question is..........DO THOSE COLD WINTER FISH TASTE BETTER THAN THE WARM SUMMER FISH??? Why yes they do 😀 I honestly believe they are a firmer meat when caught under ice but it may have something to do with being pulled around the lake all day on a stringer versus being tossed on the ice and frozen in ten minutes

Yes we do Pre Covid at the end of paint lake road about 13 miles was a gas station motel bait store they were open spring till fall then closed not sure if they will reopen they were closed in Aug when we got up for the first time the owner lived in the US so I’m not sure if they even let them in or how that all worked. The next place is about 45 miles away to get gas I’m hopeful the motel gas opens back up even though they didn’t have much they had a lot of the basic stuff if you ran out
