Friends,
Other than a few squirrels here and there over 30 years, I'm still considered "new" I guess from the perspective that my results have been dismal.
Is anyone hunting in central Indiana, within an hour of Indianapolis on December 11, 12 or December 18, 19? I'd like to find a hunting partner for squirrels. I have open sight Ruger 22 rifle. I need someone to help teach this almost old guy how to find, track, and shoot squirrels.
Thanks
Uncle Ted/Ted the Chilehead

Thanks Uncle Ted/Ted the Chilehead While I'm tied up running hounds now, I'm no help on hunting partner but this is the easiest time to kill squirrels. Leaves are down and the majority of them you see will be on the ground. Just find an area that you can see any distance and stand or sit against a tree. They will reveal themselves. That or find a horse trail or logging road and slowly walk along it. At some point you are going to see a squirrel and more than likely spook it. Just stand there for a couple minutes and it'll start running around again.

Ted, during the last couple weeks while deer hunting I have noticed that the squirrels in my area were very active in the afternoon and up until dark. Also, heard a lot of barking and chattering during the late day. They seem to be more vocal now than they were in the early season so this can help locate them.

Way down here on the south end, it seems that our squirrels are preferring to sleep in with it being colder. Didn't see activity until about 8:30am.

Yes, like others have said, if you're hunting by yourself with no dog, the most effective way to hunt squirrels is to almost hunt them like deer. Stand still against a tree and wait for one to come along. Move every 15 minutes or so. It can be boring, but its effective. Most folks that just move through the woods looking for squirrels end up spooking more than they get to shoot at.

They're usually more active midday when it gets colder weather.

I was curious about the "adult" red ryder bb gun. AHA! I said to myself, "Can it be done? Can I get a squirrel with an adult red ryder bb gun". YES! I did that a few weeks back. AND, drfleck, exactly! It was about 4:30pm on a weekend. I got within about 30 yards, got one. The only one on the only hunt I've had time for this season. But, I got a squirrel with the "adult" red ryder bb gun. Open sights, I missed his head, but the shot hit the neck. Uncle Ted/Ted the Chilehead

I was deer hunting Saturday morning and saw a gray just after sunrise, but didn't see any more activity until just a few minutes after 10am. Then the fox squirrels and the rest of the grays started moving around.
This time of year I don't get to the woods until about 8:30 if I am squirrel hunting.

Take a seat & a bow, walk in the woods & set down next to a tree. The squirrels will think you are deer hunting & climb all over you. Believe it or not it works, or at least in my woods. I have had to take a arrow out of my quiver to knock the squirrel off the branch above me because he was cutting a nut & dropping the chips on my head.

A scoped .22 and sitting quietly is by far the best way to take squirrels. I take more squirrels with my pellets rifles than most people take with shotguns. The real advantage of using a rifle is clean headshots with no busted up squirrels full of shot.
