DUCKS HATE INDIANA! The Kankakee Game Preserve was once the crown jewel of duck hunting in Northern Indiana. The attached photo is of the kill sheet for the entire place since the beginning of the season.

Yep, it's bad. Over hunted and over pressured for about 6 or 7 years now. What a shame.

I buy minnows from a hatchery not 20 miles from Stuttgart, AR. The hatchery owner said that the ducks don't hit there until January or so, and on the minnow ponds it's mostly divers. He almost sounded apologetic that there weren't any greenheads. BUT he did say "If you want to hunt the ponds, come on down.".

Waterfowl in IN. is what it is!! ive learned to just have fun with quality people and your hunts will be grand!! At least we have the opp to hunt ducks! I kill 12-15 maybe more on several hunts during the season. Things could be a whole lot worse. Count those blessings!!

Buddy called to let me know he got permission on 2 ponds and needed help shooting the ducks on the pond. I was skeptical but what the heck. Bought my stamp then the next day he called and said we would have to wait for second half but a neighbor hunted it and killed 10 ducks.
Not saying the story was a lie but 10 ducks in 1 hunt is like 82% of the season's kill last year.

He said he's up to 44-45 ducks so far for the season. He's a NW Indiana resident/hunter.

Well, while I agree with you that indiana sucks for waterfowl hunting, we did manage to kill these mallards this past weekend.

Nice job sculver7. I took my son and a nephew out Thanksgiving morning for a quick sit. We jumped birds off the roost, didn't expect that to happen. Never saw anything else (not much of a surprise) until I'm picking up decoys, and of course, a pair of geese come floating in. I already had the boys unload since I was in the pond. Elmer Fudd would be proud.

I am not a waterfowl hunter so the question is,is there a significant reason for the picture of the curling tail feathers? Does this determine age? Or is it that it is just a neat picture? I am not a waterfowl hunter so the question is,is there a significant reason for the picture of the curling tail feathers? Does this determine age? Or is it that it is just a neat picture? Onebentarrow The curl feathers don't denote age or anything really. I think that the number of curls comes from genetics mainly, but I could be wrong...?? Waterfowlers tend to think that these curl feathers are somewhat of a trophy or something; as in the more curls it has, the cooler the bird. I just think ducks of all species are freaking cool, including the curls on a mallard. What's that stupid saying that waterfowlers say...? Oh, yea: "curls for the girls." HAHAHAHA That being said, my family owns a 160-acre ag field. The east border of the field is a creek with two ponds that we dug for irrigation. We typically walk the creek a few times a year and usually kill a handful of ducks each year off it. It's actually really nice setup where we don't have to donate a lot of time to go duck hunitng. While I like going out in the swamp, setting decoys and getting the whole experience, jump shooting like we do off the creek is way more efficient.
