Headed out there tommorrow morning, but i can't find a lot of information or reviews. The maps dont have much info either. So let me pick your brains; the squirrels hang out anywhere in particular, or is it simply a matter of taking a nice, slow easy walk in the woods? Tell me about the luck you had! Joe buckmaster

Trees with any type of nuts or I have seen them in popular trees eating also…. Am and pm are great times to see them also.

Try to be out in the woods at sunrise, and especially before any wind starts. Easy to see them moving in the trees then. If there is a lot of low ground, hunt the high ground, White Oaks and Hickories don't like low wet areas.
But, this year whatever trees have nuts on them, watch them.
If you are noisy walking to an area, once you get there, wait there quietly and not moving for at least 20 minutes for the woods to forget about you.

Alrighty then... Seeing as how information is sparse, i took today as more if a scouting trip than anything. So here's how i found lasalle. First, they're open 24 hours on the weekend, but only 8-3 during the week,so i was only able to get in the field well after sunrise. Things may be different on the weekends, i'll make my next trip on saturday or sunday. 2nd, mosquito heaven! Holy crap, max DEET is your best friend here. Also, take plenty of water- stay hydrated out there! 3rd- you have to check in at the main office, but no one could tell me where the oaks were, so i spent most of my time looking for where a likely spot would be. I heard some squirrels chattering away, but never saw any. There seems to be a good spot up near parking lot 1a on the map. Mostly oaks with very little undergrowth, so it seems like a likely spot. 2 other observations, however- one, i saw a fair amount of acorns on the ground, but the trees themselves seemed pretty bare of them. And two, i didnt see or hear any evidence of cutting. Doesnt mean its not happening (hey, squirrels gotta eat) but i was surprised to not see ANY; heck, at the apartment complex i used to live at, we were ankle deep in cut acorns. Anyway, thats my report. Hopefully I'll have better luck next time. Btw, to clarify- the area i'm talking about is the easternmost parking lot, right off u.s.41, not the main parking lot by the main office. Joe buckmaster

They don’t just have a check in sheet outside where you sign in? You have to go in the office? Just don’t seem right as you’re missing the best part of the morning to hunt if you can’t sign in until 8.

Hmmm...that MAY be a technicality. The sign says all hunters MUST check in at the office, but the office opens at 8, and the actual sign in sheet is outside. I took it to mean "no one is allowed in the field til 8 a.m.". Can anyone clarify this? Joe buckmaster

Yes, that just means you have to sign in, but the office doesn’t have to be open.

Lasalle is pretty laid back, never a lot of people out there just gotta check out the areas away from the check in.
