Hey everybody! So, i'm new to all this, but eager to learn. I live in hammond, but i'm looking for nearby places i can try for squirrel and rabbit. There's some wooded areas along the little calumet river between highland and gary, along the power lines and railroad tracks( sorry, dont know if anyones familiar with the area). I'm not asking for anyones secret spot, but anyone got any advice or suggestions? Joe buckmaster

Not within corporate limits which just about rules out most of Northern Lake County. Look to State owned properties like Willow Slough or Lasalle preserve.

So, let me see if i have this straight...no hunting in "incorporated" partsof lake county, but in "unincorporated" areas (ross township, for example), you are allowed to hunt? Sorry, just trying to understand where it would be permissible, or do i literally have to go to a state f&w area like willow slough or lasalle.

It is private property up to a certain point and you need permission to hunt private. I think this has been covered several times in the Ask the CO section. It gets kind of technical. Bottom line is you can take a boat down certain streams and rivers but you cannot walk the banks. Railroads and adjacent property are private and again you need to have permission to hunt. Again the CO for your area can fill you in. Also even if you do not need to have Hunter Education taking a Hunter Ed course will probably benefit you. Here are some sources from the IDNR www.in.gov/dnr/places-to-go/indiana-dnr-locations/www.in.gov/dnr/fish-and-wildlife/properties/www.in.gov/dnr/fish-and-wildlife/hunting-and-trapping/hunting-trapping-guide/
