Looking for an entry-ish level with GPS. Photos of the screen look like it gives really detailed representations, like the kind you hear of people being able to see their bait. I am not after that kind of level of detail, per se, but more after the GPS capability and good screen visuals. www.cabelas.com/shop/en/garmin-striker-vivid-4cv-fish-finder

I just installed a 6 year old Garmin Striker 7 DV on our boat. My dad bought it and let it sit. I will say its extremely nice and detailed compared to our OLD Hummingbird and Lawrance. Maybe look it up and see if anything is similar and if so I can test or check out any part you like.

I just entered into the big screen with side scan down image and GPS. If GPS is your goal I would shop for a used 7 in or larger. They are very nice. I have a 5 in hummingbird next to a 9 inch lowarance and it is no contest. 5 inch is great for sonar. I split the 9 in on side and gps. Push a button back to full screen either way. It is pretty nice. But a bit extravagant.
I chase shad balls for the feeding fish. Side scan is game changer.

The striker will be fine for you too though. I just sold a 4in striker for $40. It came with the boat. Nice units

Clouds of shad are easy to see. Big suspended fish show up but it takes some learning. Look for the shadows. If you are comfortable in sonar it helps to see both at same time.

I have a OLD Hummingbird (circa 2001) and it has side scan (but only with the transducer mounted on the trolling motor - the vertical transducer was mounted to the boat). It would pick up roving schools of Bluegills when we were anchored, and it would tell us how far away from the boat they were. Easy to toss out a cricket under a slip bobber and whack them.

If you have never looked at side imaging it is like foreign language. But as you learn it it is awesome. Typical sonar is like a flashlight that shines down and deeper the water the wider the field of view. When you see fish on sonar they are right under you. Most fish shallow water so the cone is pretty narrow. Side imagining is more like a spinning laser that I have seen for levels. It is very narrow but sends the beam 180 degrees. So you can see left, center and right of your boat vs a spot light cone. So when looking at the side image the boat is center, the black middle is water column directly beneath the boat and the other colors to left and right is the water column. The grid markers are estimate how far away the mark is. You can see the balls of shad in the image below. Maybe some other fish, have not looked close.
