So the way I am reading their comments is that they are allowing the 27% that opposed the season be the determining factor and not the 42% that were in favor of the season or the 30% that were neutral? When does the smaller number equal the majority? Outside influence would be my thought…. But in all fairness the season was set up to only be in countries with a 4 or more quota! Last year they didn’t go by the original intent of the rules IMO

The counties that were included in the late antlerless season had been dropping over the last few seasons. Throw in the fact that last season's harvest was up by 10,000 over the previous year and perhaps it's as simple as the DNR felt like for the special antlerless season had served it's purpose over the last several years and just wasn't necessary for the upcoming season.

Did you read the email Woody posted…. It says the season “was not effective” “This season was originally designed in 2012 to help increase antlerless harvest, but it was not effective at this. Since then it has been retained as a means to provide more hunting opportunity, but it has been met with continual pushback by many hunters who believe that it negatively affects the deer population. Therefore, the season will be retained unchanged (with a CBAQ requirement of 4+) as it has not been widely accepted as increasing hunting opportunity without affecting harvest. The season is closed until a county has a CBAQ of 4 or more at which time the special season will be open in that county(s) only” Moriah Moriah Boggess Deer Biologist

^^ LOL
If there was ANY harvest during the antlerless harvest, then it was effective. How many deer did they expect to have been harvested?

The present rule is for the late special antlerless season to kick in for any county 4 and over. That sounds like to me the special antlerless season IS for population control.

Now come on, he said it was retail ed for opportunity. So it's just time to eliminate the 4 or higher quota requirement and just make it open in every county every year. The county quota will take care of the population control.

I could care less either way. I only hunted the late season once, and that was only to take my idiot soon-to-be-ex BIL hunting. By post-holiday time, I'm tired of hunting, it's too cold for my taste, and I'm more interested in wasting time and money on crap for my boat (yes, the one I took out three times this year).

When does the smaller number equal the majority? It was a tool to increase harvest but it didn't really affect the harvest. Sounds like that and the opposition created enough of a reason to shut it down. I don't think the public should be the deciding factor on how deer seasons are structured.

History of the Special Antlerless Firearms Season
In 2012, a Special Antlerless Firearms season was implemented for the first time in 74 Indiana counties to increase antlerless harvests, specifically in counties that had county bonus antlerless quotas (CBAQs) of four or more.
The special season ultimately had little effect on annual antlerless harvests.
CBAQs were gradually lowered across the state, and fewer counties had CBAQs high enough to be included in the special season.
In 2019, an outbreak of epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) across southern Indiana led to an emergency rule change that lowered all CBAQs to two or fewer. The 19 counties that had CBAQs of four prior to the EHD outbreak were left open to the special season.
In 2020, no counties had CBAQs of four, and none were to be open for the special season under the original rule language. A temporary rule change was issued for the 2020-2021 hunting season that opened the Special Antlerless Firearms season statewide, except in Benton and Tipton counties.
A set of questions about the Special Antlerless Firearms Season was asked in the 2021 Indiana Deer Management Survey to assess public support for the season.
43% of respondents supported and 27% opposed the special season.
24% of respondents participated in the 2020-2021 special season.
22% of surveyed participants successfully harvested a deer during the special season.
A complete report of this survey will be included in the 2020 Indiana White-tailed Deer Report available on Deer Management & Reports webpage.
In 2021, no counties have CBAQs of four or more, thus the Special Antlerless Firearms season is closed. Until a county has a CBAQ high enough to qualify for the season, the Special Antlerless Firearms Season will remain closed statewide.

There are a few people chest thumping and claiming they shut it down but what shut it down was no 4 and up bonus quota counties this coming season. That is what the regulations call for.

Nothing has changed at all as far as seasons in Indiana. The qualifier for a special late season antlerless season merely isn’t met by any county this year - folks really gotta stop saying the season was cancelled or no longer exists as that isn’t true. And the IDNR didn’t title the page in the book right with making it seem as such in the title but the article itself outlining the facts.

They should of published the bonus map the same time the season closed was published IMO It doesn’t help that the IWDHM is claiming the season is closed do to the survey last year! Plenty of egg on faces now the survey results and details are public!

So....... if the overall harvest total is lower, will we hear that the herd is decimated again? If the overall harvest total is equal to or higher, will we start hearing that bonus antlerless permits need to be eliminated completely?
