Everything in white is what I’ve had dug in the last few years. Excavator is in there now working on another pond. This is on my training grounds that I train retrievers on. Ponds are only 6ft at the deepest, just need enough to swim dogs. It’s a all summer job mowing, spraying, keeping cattails and moss out of the ponds. Some day I hope to get a indoor kennel system built with live in quarters.

From the state of 10,000 lakes and you need to dig a pond? Thats why they dont need to be deep enough to hold fish over winter.

Budd:
To keep the moss (filamentous algae) out you need to spray any water that is shallower than 24" bi weekly with Cutrine Plus liquid algaecide and throw the granular version in deeper water than 24" where ever the sun can hit the bottom of the pond.
Or stock Tilapia annually once the water reaches 60°F. Don't know if the Tilapia are legal there, they are here, but not in Illinois.

I have my own little formula . Not sure if it can be promoted...LOL. I treat the water once a year at a cost of about $25 per acre of surface water.

Yeah, there is some stuff out there that is NOT rated for use in the water and it does a great job of keeping it clear.

Yeah, there is some stuff out there that is NOT rated for use in the water and it does a great job of keeping it clear. Having more ponds added this fall at my house. I was at a retriever event near Fargo this weekend and their water was beautiful blue color. They said they had added a product call crystal blue, supposedly has a uv blocker to help with algae growth. Have you had any experience with this product? Im thinking hitting all my ponds with Karmex in the spring followed up with Crystal Blue. Remember I dont keep fish in my ponds as they are only 3-4ft deep. Although they are full of minnows that I never put in.

Yeah, Karmex is the stuff I was referring to that is not rated for use in ponds. The comoany that used to make it sold the rights to it and the company that bought it did so in an agreement that it wasn't taking on any liability of misuse of it from previous users of it. There have been some case of cancer tied to it. While it was labeled for use in water years ago, now it is not labeled for use in water.
Crystal Blue, Aquashade and many other pond dyes all block the sun by coloring the water darker. I can get the dye in different shades of black and blue.
The blue dye that I have comes in quart containers and each quart will treat approximately 1.3 million gallons of water. Black dye is $19.85/qt plus shipping, blue is $19.05 plus shipping.

What are the ramifications of karmex if used in pond? I have read about cancer. How bad for fish, wildlife and people?

What are the ramifications of karmex if used in pond? I have read about cancer. How bad for fish, wildlife and people? Im not saying you should or should not use karmex, thats up to you to decide. I have been swimming my dogs in it for YEARS, done a lot of research with people that have used it long before I was around and none said they noticed any ill effects on their dogs that are swam in it daily. Talked to a farmer that has been treating his farm ponds that the cattle use for drinking. Every spring I have a couple hundred goslings hatched out around my ponds and have only found 1 half grown dead one..unknown cause. Ponds are full of leopard frogs and minnows. Everyone seems happy and healthy. Not a weed anywhere in my ponds. Several of the northern and western clubs had issue's with blue/green algae and had to move their events this summer, caused from a drought this summer. Although very low water, I dont have ANY algae growing in my ponds. Everyone I talked with said if they had fish in their ponds they would NOT have used karmex, although none said they had seen fish kill because of karmex, but that is what they had "heard" would happen.

Just wanted to know what you think? Someone I know put in their pond. I won’t fish or eat any from it now. He doesn’t seem to care other that the weeds are now all gone. I would never use in my pond.

As a licensed herbicide applicator I'd get in trouble if I were to use a product off label and word got back to the State Chemist.
