Good evening. I am hoping to go backpacking for 1 night this weekend.
Our goal is to hike about 4- 6 miles each way and camp overnight. I'd prefer some place remote. I was initially thinking of going to HNF near Nebo ridge but have heard some bad stories from a local sherrif.
Can anyone provide suggestions for a suitable backpacking spot that meets the criteria within a couple hours of Indy?

I've hiked the Nebo Ridge Trail and not had any bad experiences. It is a very popular trail. I haven't spent a ton of time there though.
Deam Wilderness and the surrounding NF is where most of my overnight spots have been. Peninsula Trail is a good one, with quite a few campsites out on the peninsula. Patton Cave is worth a visit also.

I've hunted around Nebo Ridge quite a bit the last few years and haven't had any issues. But then again, I've never left my truck there overnight. I've been hearing that a lot of catalytic convertors have been stolen off of vehicles parked around Lake Monroe this year so right now that would be my biggest concern.

Thanks 36fan It's a little longer than you are looking for, but the Adventure Hiking Trail is a 25 mile loop around O'Bannon Woods SP. I've heard water can be unreliable and people cache water. Check out Deem National Wilderness Area. I know there are backpacking trails down there. |

Also, Shades SP has a 2.5 mile trail back to a backpack camp.
