I'm new to this forum and want to start trapping, coyotes mostly. I've hunted coyotes with a thermal scope for years and had quite a bit of success. Now I want to trap. A few questions for the guys with experience. What's the difference between lure and bait. I understand I need both on each set. Dirt hole sets seem to be the most successful. What's the best location for sets? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Lure is a scent that they can smell from a long or close distance to attract them to the set. Bait is something that they can eat that is put down a dirt hole set. You don't "have to" use bait at some sets. But you typically use lure at most sets. Even coyote urine could be considered a lure.

You should use different kinds of sets. They are smart when it comes to trapping. Dirt holes, pee post ,flat sets all can be successful if done right. Do your best to read as much aboot coyote trapping as you can. Fur,fish and game is prolly one of the best for articles on trapping. Wood chuck chunks are a good bait for yotes. You need a good anchor for the traps. Drags can work well if you have a lot of trees and brush around.

Thanks for the info. I bought traps, bait, lure and all the fixings today. I'm thinking coyote trapping is a lot like coyote hunting. Hunters give up after not catching anything for a while. I believe in sticking to it for the long haul. I'll learn. Thanks again!

You will need trap dye and wax. Go look at the youtube vids from Hoosier Trapper Supply. You will need trap anchors/stakes, chain, springs to put on the trap chain, pan covers kneeling pad, tool to make dirt hole sets, waxed dirt, etc., etc., etc.
See if there is going to be a trapping convention here in Indiana this year, they usually have a few seminars on how to trap coyotes there.
Yes get a subscription to Fur, Fish Game magazine. I've had one since I was a kid.

Yeah I bought all that stuff with the traps. Looking forward to trying it out. Gotta get some cooking pots big enough for boiling the traps.

Best set locations are where two types of terrain meet. Woods edge, fence rows, where a corn field meets a bean field, where a drainage ditch meets a field, and farm lanes are a great locations.

^^^^^ where the most features meet put in a set! Standard dirt hole with bait in the hole and lure on the backing will produce fur.

I would not over complicate this. Coyotes are not really that smart. I’d stick with one kind of set and get good at it. Then repeat that set over and over on all your trapping properties. Same with bait/lure. One good bait and or lure/urine is all you need. No need in packing around ten bottles of different lure. Find what sets, bait, lure your confident in and go after them. Good luck

Good luck That sounds like good advice, admittedly I don’t have a whole lot of experience with trapping and I don’t know whether coyotes are smart or not. However I do know they are a lot harder to trap then say a coon in a dog proof trap.
