I've had a few rabbits running around our house for quite awhile now. There was a couple litters of them born last summer. Off and on all winter I'd see 1 out in the fence row when I went out to let the ducks out or put them back in at sunup and sundown. I never had my gun with me though because I had the ducks on my mind. When we went hunting we never chased them up. Since the season is about over and the snow's melting,I've been on a mission to get 1 the last few days. I've been bringing my shotgun with me but haven't seen any. I even set a life trap in the back yard because every night they turn on the motion sensor lights out back. This evening not long before dark I went out to reset the life trap before I put the ducks up and noticed a rabbit under a cedar tree between the house and pond. I thought, rifle time. On further looking I saw there was actually 2 under there,1 on the North side of the trunk and 1 on the South. I went in,got my .22 rifle and went out and sat on the Park bench on our porch, with my orange hat on of course . Aimed for the North one's head, shot and it fell over. Surprisingly the other 1 didn't take off. I aimed for it but there were a lot of limbs in the way but I shot anyway hoping it'd make it through but I missed. So I went over to the South side of our shed where we put the trash barrels and leaned against the old refrigerator. Aimed, shot and it fell over. I thought how sweet,2 rabbits in a few minutes without leaving the back yard. Now dad always said he didn't trust them if they didn't run because they could have rabbit fever but also that freezing then cooking them should make them safe. I usually follow that rule and rarely shoot a sitting rabbit but these I couldn't resist. They were both males by the way so I didn't hurt the rabbit population. I think there's still 1 that lives behind the duck building in the fence row.

My cousin in Wy won't hunt rabbits until after it has been below freezing, saying that the ones with rabbit fever will die off after the first frost.

Well if that's the case I know I'm fine with the weather we've had this year. I've seen them take off out of there since last summer so I'm sure they're ok anyway. I don't start hunting them until after deer firearms season's over.

Only hunt rabbits during the months that have an "R" in them.

Only hunt rabbits during the months that have an "R" in them. So April,September and October too ? I don't think the CO would like that too well.
