As part of my new part time gig at Scheels selling guns we are getting a LOT of training. The first couple weeks were Scheels culture and theory on customer service and sales. From then (first of January) until we open the end of March we are have product knowledge training on products by manufacturers reps twice a week. Of that, every Thursday we are at a private range training with and shooting firearms reps (so far Seekins Precision, Springfield, Bergara and CZ USA). We get serious trigger time with the range of firearms we are carrying from each (BTW, the Seekins are INCREDIBLE). This week we had an extra day of shooting!!! After a 3 hour class from Vortex Optics Tuesday night (on the construction, options and theory behind optics) we were treated to a day of long range shooting on Vortex at a private ranch out on the plains. Targets were from 350 to 1072 yards. We shot rifles from Browning, Tikka and Seekins - all in 6.5 Creedmoor topped with Vortex Optics from the Razor line up. To find shooting solutions we used the Vortex Fury app and the Fury laser Rangefinder with ballistic calculator. Upload the weapon and cartridge info into the app, it bluetooths it to the binocs, and BAMMM ....witchcraft!!!! It was incredibly easy to find the dope......I worked it out to 1072 yards within 5 shots with varying winds. After several hours of fun we had a competition.
The competition rules were this: we each got 6 rounds (one for practice, 5 for score), we could pick any of the rifles, we could engage either the 452 yd or 1072 yd targets (1 point for each hit at 452 and 3 for 1072 with the ability to stop when you wanted) and if you missed you were done and lost your points. I was third to last and by the time it came to me only 2 folks had points on the board. One guy got 15 the other 12......both series shot with about zero wind. I step up to about 10-12 mph variable winds and quickly decide that, since I have already rung the gong at 1072, I am shooting the 452. I get situated on a Tikka (the camo stocked pic) I had shot most recently and proceeded to dong all six. I stood up and the retired Army sniper doing the spotting smiles and tells me I put all 6 within an inch and a half The Vortex folks told us before we started that there would be prizes but thankfully I did not look on the prize table before I shot. This was my reward for 3rd place. That was a VERY good day at work!!!
