This is both a rant and a sincere question. It is in no way meant to disrespect anyone who truly is struggling financially.
Just who (occupation) is unemployed and why can't they find a job? There is a story today on one of the local new station's website about "struggling Hoosiers" waiting for delayed unemployment benefits. The story features quotes from a few folks and how they are facing shortages of various essentials. What the story did NOT mention is any example of looking for a job.
I can't drive from my house to town without seeing help wanted signs. There is a mfg facility that has had a sign offering $15/hr starting wage plus benefits for so long that the paint is fading. My wife has been trying to hire five office assistants for months with NO applications received. Not career-level pay, but guaranteed hours indoors. I noticed a Hispanic guy at one of my houses yesterday hanging gutters by himself.
"You by yourself?" "Yes, no one wants to work" "No amigos?" He just shook his head. Absolute true story.

A lot places that are hiring just don't take "anyone"....a lot times what someone can do doesn't match up with what is being offered. Most people that have good working skills are working now if they want to IMO

I cant believe it either. Factories here in town begging for people. People going in with an ankle monitor and still getting a job, that is how hard up they are. You can go to one of them and if you will work make 100,000 a year. People are just lazy.

A 40 hour week @ $48.00 per hour is 100,000!

AT that rate they have to work around 32 hours of overtime every week of the year for the 100,000 k! That would be a hustler for sure....

I think I watched the same report. It suffered from having less than credible interview subjects.
I personally went about a year between jobs recently, but my health eliminated most possibilities. I had a nasty abdominal hernia surgery on top of an already messed up back, so I didn't even consider most physical jobs. Fortunately I had built up a financial reserve, so I could do that.
It is hard to believe that in this environment that a healthy person hustling cannot find something. I have heard subtle variations of these two comments many times since last spring:
"We can't get anybody." " My factory/restaurant/whatever is hiring anyone that breathes."
Oh course, you have to be willing to work less than glamorous jobs sometimes. I suspect "I can't find a job," means "I can't find a job I want." Some are too good to flip burgers or clean bathrooms if they have to.
That said, anyone can hit a dry spell when they are looking. And health, where you live and your vehicle status could make the difference. And some are alone...no family support whatsoever. That would make things harder when everything hits at once. I haven't been jobless very long in my life but it's not a good feeling. Probably a year and six months total out of 25 plus years. Half of that time I was crippled up anyway!

In my corner of state CVG airport, DHL, UPS, FedEx and Amazon are begging for workers. Most can’t or won’t pass drug tests. Covid -19 is a big issue as well.

My 16 yr old has been rejected for 3 jobs this week. And a few others won't consider anyone under 18. I told her to keep looking and applying. It isn't impossible. I think she expected to be hired at 1st place she applied. Now she is stressed about it. I told her to buckle up, life rarely gets any easier.

People are used to barely making it living off the government tit and are fine with that. We have the same situation in amd around Cincinnati. Plenty of places hiring amd pay isn't bad, but people don't wanna work

I was looked at like a leper when I said the best thing that could happen to our community would be a factory close down. To be fair, is was in a room full of people trying to get more businesses to come here - something about justifying the new airport they just had to have.
My thinking is every single place is hiring, well trying to hire. If a factory closed everybody at that facility that wanted a job could easily find one and all the places looking for workers would have a fresh pool of willing workers.
Wasn't a well received opinion.

At both my jobs they set up interviews and about 1/3 of the people don't even show up. We are fully staffed at both places but it's been a struggle.
I feel old saying this but the younger generation has a terrible work ethic. Not all of them, but enough to make an impact. They want someone else to support them. We just had a younger guy get hired. Early 20's and this is his first job ever. Never had a car, no license, no income whatsoever until now. I just don't get it. When I was that age I had a wife, a child, and worked 70 hours a week between 2 jobs.

Same problem in my field of diesel mechanics. Always need help, but rarely ever found anybody qualified. So had to hire mostly young, very inexperienced kids. You spend a lot of time helping, teaching, and grooming them. By the time you are getting somewhere, they leave. Very frustrating. Worse yet, we have had ZERO applicants in 4-5 yrs now. So, a couple jerks at works have realized this, and have decided to play games, slow down, take advantage knowing that they cant hardly be turned away or disciplined because we got nobody else. Really a BS situation for us.

Really a BS situation for us. The "problem childern" is something my company (well at least those workers who actually care) has been dealing with for far too long. It's nearly impossible to get fired here and they changed the attendance policy last year to make a bit harder. I'm part of the group that simply doesn't understand why some don't want to put forth an effort to better their lives. I get the idea of "do something you love and you'll never work a day in your life" but you gotta be able to eat long enough to get to that point.

Manufacturing jobs tend to work different than just straight pay and OT most places in SW Indiana offer double time after x amount of hours. The place I work is 40 hrs straight 10 hrs. OT then double. If a guy or gal REALLY needed 100k and could work for it they could easily make 100k they just wouldn't see the fam too much.

Ive got a biddy that works for only one of 2 or 3 places in the country that recertifies cmnpressed gas cylinders. As you can imagine, theyre pretty busy with oxygen cylinders.
Most of their positions are unskilled labor. Zero applicants, they cant even get temp employees.
They even started ignoring marijuana on drug screens.

I have an "S" O2 tank out for recert. Bought it at an auction and it was 3 years out of date. Passed visual with no problems.
