When I looked outside yesterday morning my front yard along the road looked like a war zone because of the ice storm.
I had several BIG TREES that the county highway had to push back onto my property because they fell on to the roadway.
In addition I also had a couple trees that either split in two or were broken in half and were blocking part of the roadway.
HERE IS WHERE THINGS TAKE A STRANGE TWIST.
I bought this land at auction when the farmer/owner ran into financial problems, he was the kind of guy that very few could get along with including me. One of his sons lives down the road from me and he to has never said more than a handful of words to me in the 20 years I have lived here.
Yesterday morning I see the son park in the roadway in front of my house and walk up to my door, he asked me if he could cut up the trees that had fallen "WHY HELL YES I SAID"
He along with one of his sons, a chainsaw and a farm tractor with log grappling claws made short order of cutting up and removing the all of the trees that either fell or broke in two, he even asked if could cut down a very large tree that was partially blocking my driveway as well as the county road.
He has an outside boiler/furnace and so he burns a lot of wood he said he will clean up all of the remaining small branches on a later date which he left in a neighbors field across the road. This was was a heaven sent event because it would have taken me a long time to clean up the mess or I would have spent a lot of money having someone else do it.
I think my NEW YEAR IS OFF TO A GOOD START and maybe he and I will become good neighbors.

Nice turn of events.
You become a wood slave when you tend an outdoor boiler. I actually made my own years ago. It was great, but as said, they require a lit of wood. I gave up after 8 yrs and sold it.

Love neighbors like that.
A few years ago I had close to 20 trees down. All were white pines. I moved a few out to the woods then was able to get a few loads out to span but a neighbor stopped by asked if he could have the rest. He loved pine in his boiler. My answer was probably the same. He got them loaded then raked and swept up all the left over debris when I was at work.

I gave up after 8 yrs and sold it. I think my brother is starting to outgrow his as well. The first house we bought was in town. The neighbor asked if he could mow what amounted to about 1/3 of my yard so that he could keep the mow lines straight with his. Our property lines were odd and what looked like should be his yard was mine. I happily obliged.

That worked out good for both of you. I hope you can stay on good terms. We help out with tree removal for the ladies that live on our road. Unfortunately we don't have wood stoves. We cut the trees for them and drag them out of their yard and into an overgrown clearing on their property.

I do enjoy the work of cutting wood. I feed my outdoor boiler between 17-20 logger cord, depends how bad the winter is. I heat my house, two shops, and hot water. This winter should be my all time low on used wood. Only burned 2 cord so far. I like ash, birch, tamarack. Makes cutting shooting lanes behind the house two fold.

I heated garage, water heater, and home as well. But I ran out of desire. Was using about 15-18 cords of mostly unspoilt wood, whatever type we could get. That was probably a reason for the qty, pine, skids, etc. My back has paid the price dearly now. We are back to only burning a woodstove in the house. We now use 3 cord absolute max. Nice and easy compared to before.

I stuck with my wood stove with electric heat pump. I use the electric until it is either below freezing or 40 and rainy

The neighbor and one of his sons came back tonight they cut and removed the rest of the trees and the remains then hauled them away. We spoke and I agreed to let him take some more trees that need to be removed before they cause problems. It's been a good year so far.

As it has been said before "just about the time you think you have someone figured out....." Hopefully this could turn into something mutually beneficial for the both of you.
