Has anyone ever shot a deer that had a current wound, or obvious infection? Say, a deer that had been recently shot by another hunter, but not a fatal wound. Is that animals meat still edible, even with a wound? Or even a past wound? I`m just curious about this?

I killed one years ago that looked healthy but when I skinned him yellow pus was inside one of his hind quarters. I cut it off and threw it in the woods. Looked like a 22 round hit him. The rest was ok.

If it has puss around anything...I pass.
If the meat is bruised and blood shot...I pass.
Other than that if it looks good and smells good I am game.

I shot a buck once with a gun a few weeks after I had shot it with a bow. I don't remember what it looked like but If I recall it was limping.

Years ago my brother shot a doe in muzzleloader and when we skinned it, it had a pocket of thick lime green substance by its spine about the size of a softball. Smelled horrible. We dug all that stuff out and found a stainless steel broadhead stuck in her spine, buried in the bone . We called the DNR and they told us that was her antibodies trying to dissolve the broadhead. Told us to just cut around the area and the meat should be fine, it was.

It was infected from the wound, but the rest was fine. One year I shot a nice ten point that was limping, that guy smelled rotten. Someone put a slug in his front leg and broke all the bone and it stank. You could look in his front shoulder and see maggots. That whole deer was left to the coyotes.

That`s kind of been what I was wondering...if there were an obvious infection or wound, would it be throughout the entire animals system internally, and therefore, all the meat would be impacted? Maybe it would take a veterinarian or wildlife biologist to know?

I killed a doe with a bad limp one year. When skinning she had been shot with a 22 in the shoulder. It was all infected. I cut the shoulder off and pitched it the rest was good. I also have killed 2 bucks that had broad heads buried in them that were completely healed with no signs at all. The only way I found them was I hit them with the meat cutting band saw. One was in a shoulder blade the other was laying along g the back bone.

I shot a buck with a wound just above the backbone. Had stuff ozzing out. The processer cut it out no problems. I shot a button buck that was limping on both front legs. He was on bone on one leg the other had half a hoof. Both appeared to be mostly healed. No problems. I came on a buck limping bad. I cut the distance down and put one through the lungs. I have only gagged on 2 deer, one when I accidently swallowed a bit of Redman and this buck. He was BAD. I took him to check in and called the CO. He said it was a road kill and advised me to cut the rack off and dump the carcass where I hunt. I had already called the processor to look at it so the CO told me to call him if I shot another deer and he would take care of the tag. The shoulder was the only thing bad. Rest was good. I shot another limping deer. It had a slug hole just above the ankle that did not break the leg. All swollen and . When I gutted him the fat was yellow. There was no smell out of the ordinary. When I sliced the liver up I noticed a smell. The meat all had that same smell. I can't describe it but I can't forget it. Some cuts were ok but a good half of it smelled and got dumped.

Wrap it in bacon and dip it in ranch. Gotta be good that way. If you know how to cook it.
A friend at work said that was code for heavy spiced breading and deep fried.
