What are some good setups with powder and sabot, and the newer types of sabot, and power points or just ball. I want some thing that can reach out there and still have enough killing power. I have a Trader Market 54 cal. and a 50 cal. with a set trigger on it. Thanks Steady

No such thing as a "good setup". Your gun will be different than my gun will be different than Fred's gun. In general, assuming a patched Round Ball, use no less than 1/2 caliber in grains powder and no more than 2.5x caliber. Minnie Balls and REAL conicals start at no less than caliber and go to no more than 2.5x Sure, most new guns are "rated" for 150gr, but in general, most anything over 120gr has diminishing returns in velocity. And I don't use sabots. IMEX anyway.

"I have a Trader Market 54 cal. and a 50 cal. with a set trigger on it." I am not familiar with the name. Given the set trigger I am assuming they are side locks. Most modern side locks came with a shallow groove 1-48 twist barrel. They shoot light to medium patched roundball loads good. They will usually shoot the TC maxi or Buffalo bullets good with about 80 to 100 grains of powder. Get a good stout range rod and plan on cleaning between shots. Round ball loads have an advantage in that you may play with patch thickness to get a good fit. Try .530 / .490 with .015 patches. Good luck, Steve

I've never had an ounce of trouble out of a round ball put to bed on pillow ticking over 90 grains of FFg out of a .45 Hawken. Adjust load for your corresponding caliber accordingly.
I've never had to take a shot at a deer over 35-40 yards, so you might factor that into what kinds of distances you are thinking about. I won't hesitate to pop a squirrel at that same distance in the head with same load.

If its made to shoot round ball it will have a 1-66 or 1-60 twist, conicals, maxiball and light bullets in sabots are 1-48 and sabot/bullet and heavy conicals are 1-32 to 1-24 twist. If you can give more info on the gun that would help. h.h.
