For years I've just used an energizer head lamp I got from Lowe's and I'm wanting to upgrade to something that has a lot farther reach, especially when the red light is on so I can see if I"m about to scare off any deer going to my spot.
I'm not taking shots at energizer, however I feel that after around 40 yards I'm losing a lot of light, even with new batteries in it. Does any fine upstanding individual on this forum have any recommendations for what I should be looking for? I'm wanting something that I can see out to around 100 yards or so and I'm only wanting to use the red light option. If I have to cycle thru settings to get to that option that is fine.
It seems that I've kicked to many deer out of the woods that I'm trying to get into with my energizer. Thanks to all you fine gents out there.

I bought a rechargeable streamlight headlamp last year for my elk hunt. It had a rubber cap with a red lense. That thing is very bright. I do not use the red lense on it. It was around $70. I bought a bunch of spare rechargeable batteries for it. I've used it tracking deer and shooting 3D ranges at night. I'd like to buy one for my dad for Christmas.

I use a black diamond headlamp. I would give it a 8.4/10. It has so many functions on it, that it's almost hard to remember how to use each one, but it is a nice headlamp. it has options o be white, green, red, and blue colored light and each of those colors a variably dimmable and also have a spotlight option when used all the way bright. It was around 40 dollars, I believe.

sculver, about how far can you see with the red lights on? And do you happen to know the model of it by chance? Thanks

I know you are probably looking for a headlamp, but I had an 8 d cell flashlight over 30 years ago. Double stack, variable intensity, it came with a red and a clear lens. With the clear lens I could illuminate houses 1/4 mile away. I still have it somewhere, I can look for it if you want, I forgot the name, but I have seen it recently in a coon hunters supply catalog.

I believe it is the Storm 400 model. I don't know if I can put an exact distance of sight on the red light. What I will say is that it shines far enough ahead that it lights up eyes about 50 yards away. I eyeshined a possum the other night on my way out of the woods with the red light at about 50 yards. It might do the same at farther distances, I don't know, but I can confirm it does at 50 yards. Hope that helps.

It does, thanks everyone. I just prefer a headlamp what way something to free up my hands while I'm carrying my gun in. I may have to look at other avenues. Thanks once again.

Bartiks,
Did you make a headlamp purchase? I too had an Energizer headlamp but, on my last outing it wasn't working. After climbing into the blind and the sun came up I took a better look at it. Two of the battery housing lid clips were broke, not allowing it to seal and make proper battery contact.
Anyhow, it was a "good" light. But, I think I want a "better" headlamp now. I too am looking for a little more distance out of the beam. Red/green/white lights are preferred.
Thanks.

Another vote for the Black Diamond Storm model. Can adjust brightness, lock it to prevent accidentally turning it on, red blue and green options and very bright! It even has a battery strength display.

You almost need to carry the owners manual with you, or at least I do.
