The boy child and I were at Monroe yesterday for the first time. Ended up choosing blind 7 in the dead middle of the marsh. Love the location, but that blind needs an enormous amount of work. I realize we had to be seeing the same birds more than once, but saw over 1000 birds. Had well over 100 coming down in the air multiple times. Found out we can't shoot worth a crap. Discovered the guys in the blind behind us didn't want us to kill any geese because they took 100+ yard shout at birds almost 200 feet in the air. Found out that I can still run a goose call. 10 blinds full of guys and everyone and the check station on the way out said we were the only blind to get the geese to turn and come down, they seemed quite upset we were robbed by the barrel stretchers. All in all it was a good day. I shot my first ever ring neck and got a pair of gadwalls. Glad some birds showed up. We were in 11 on Sunday and saw very few birds and didn't fire a shot. One blind did 90% of the shooting.

After finishing the trailer load of wood yesterday I took the body bag from my Monroe hunt down to the creek to feed the mink. Once back at the cabin I realized I rode the length of the flats and didn't avoid the cottonwood tree that had fallen across the creek. Right before I left I went back down to see what had happened to it. I was standing on the 4 wheeler about 10 feet from the creek when 13 big, fat, gorgeous wood ducks landed beside me. 😳
Loved the show, but hunting next to a running motor is going to take some getting used to.

So what happened to the cottonwood tree? That seems to bo one of life's little mysteries. Neither one of us remembers a flood event big enough to move it, but it is gone. The tops are still on the rock ledge on the other side, the little sycamore that went down with it is still there, but the cottonwood is gone.

I think we just haven't paid enough attention the last few months and the creek took it. It's a long strait section of flat rock. When the water comes up is moves quick with nearly nothing to catch on.

Finally we have geese in central Indiana ahead of the cold weather. Several Canada, a ton of Spec's and snows. We ended up with 6 Canada and a Spec today after some horrible shooting. Helps when you get to shot at them more than a time or two a year. Lol

It was a long cold day. But we did scratch out 3 Canada and 4 Specs today. Tomorrow is it for dark geese. With single digits all day and a long one today. I think my season is in the books.
