Black powder is classified as an Explosive. The legal requirements to sell it are stiff.
Black powder subs are classified the same as smokeless. It's easier to get and sell this. Eventually blackpowder for sporting applications will be extinct.

Like wolfhound said and they have to keep it in a special explosive proof box. The demand for blackpowder dwindles every year. If you look around usually there is a gun shop that deals in muzzleloaders that still carries BP. Blackpowder is getting expensive, one shop i know sells Goex for 25.00 a pound. h.h.

Thanks for the replies guys. I was aware that some red tape was involved in retailing black powder. I wonder about the specifics of those regulations and how stringent they are to the retailer. Is there no room for retailers to make a profit on it? I KNOW dozens of guys that would kill to be able to buy it locally. In some circles, black powder is the ONLY powder deemed appropriate in muzzleloaders. Any more information is appreciated.

While they still exist you can buy BP in 25lb "bulk" bags for about 1/2 the cost of 1lb cans from Deer Creek Products in Waldron (near Indy). They don't have a Website, but they are listed in the phonebook.
Given the cost of shipping and the mandatory Hazardous Materials Fee if you live within a couple of hours of Waldron it is really worth the drive.

It is not only the Red Tape about Black Powder being explosive, it is the Insurance requirements and cost that goes along with the selling of BP.

I have some stuff from a BATFE (Explosives Inspection Div) Friend of mine dealing with homebrew.
I'll work on posting a summary.

That's why every time I go to the shoot at Friendship I buy 10 to 20 pounds, but I think that you have to be an NMLRA member. I still prefer Goex for my flintlock and old Hawken, and as long as you keep your powder dry it will last forever. It doesn't take long to burn up a can at 50 to 60 grain charges for round balls in the flinter.

The best deal is if you know someone who goes to Friendship. I think Deer Creek sells the Chinese black powder. There is a difference. I like the Chinese stuff better than the Elephant brand. I like Goex. The Swiss stuff is really good, but pricey.

The chinese (LIDU/Dragon) sold by Deer Creekis excellent powder - provided you sift the fines out.
I've done a fairly extensive bit of testing various powders and the #1 difference in the Super Premium Powders like Swiss and Goex Express is not the composition, but the consistancy in granualtion.
If you use a 40mesh brass screen and sift out all the 4F/fines (anywhere from 30 - 50% depending on mfg.) the Standard Deviations in velocity from volumetric loadings drop like a rock. Cleanup is also 200% easier. Simply, 3F with a minimum grain size of .015 burns cleaner and more consistently than 3F mixed with 4F.

Ive often thought about order some but since going smokeless i dont shot BP much at all. h.h.

Both Swiss & Graf use alder, which is a bit more "powerful" but not enough so to make as much difference to me as sifting does. You may get an extra 50 - 100 fps depending on the loading, but that's really not worth an extra $5/lb to me. If I need more Poop than 120gr 3F and a 36ogr minnieball in my flinter will give me, I am doing somthing wrong. It's not like I'm shooting anything more than 125yds away.

The laws governing black powder suck. They just opened a huge fireworks outlet in Ft. Wayne. It is full of pyrotechnics loaded with Black Powder. Down the road Gander Mt and H&H can only keep 50 lbs in their stores. BP is cheap compared to pellets.

Sharps, please let us know what you carry. I'm in Fort Wayne so a roadie down to your shop isn't out of the question.

Just bought 2 lbs. of Goex at Gander Mountain in Ft. Wayne today. $14.99 per lb. You have to ask for it because they keep it locked up. There is also a 4 lb. limit that they will sell a person in a day.
