We said goodbye to Carlie today...
My wife found Carlie when she was but a kitten, barely weaned. Carlie and her siblings had been abandoned by who knows whom, at the entrance to our cul-de-sac. My wife brought home both Carlie and her sister, a little better than 15 years ago; rescued them from hunger and the cold and the predators, both natural and the vehicular type. My wife found a forever home for Carlie's sister, and so this great adventure began, the upbringing of Carlie.
Carlie was always a very complex girl, and extremely intelligent, almost with a presence like that of a person, and oh so willful. She was quick to learn and very trainable, as illustrated by knowing that when the television was turned off each evening, she knew to run to the basement door and wait on the first step for her nightly treats before descending to the basement to crawl into her cat bed, to snuggle in for the night. Her most hilarious move was whenever I would take a tissue out of the Kleenex box to blow my nose from the incessant sinus troubles and allergies, and Carlie would run for some other room, not to be disturbed by my loud "honking", as I cleared my sinuses. Too funny.
I`ve hunted over a good many very fine bird dogs, most of them Brittany`s, and have loved every minute of it. But still yet, I guess I`m what you would call a "cat guy", and make no apologies for that. I would often tell Carlie that cats rule, and dogs drool. LOL. Carlie led the life that ANY animal, any pet would dream of and be envious of. Her shelf in the pantry was ALWAYS stuffed to the BRIM with wet food, treats, and the bag of dry food was never-ending. She was a lady of leisure, she was the queen of the household, she was spoiled beyond belief, and still, she gave so much more joy, pleasure, companionship and enjoyment than we could ever repay.
Over the past few weeks, Carlie began to decline noticeably. Her decline had begun in earnest months ago, but the real decline, the decline that sadly told us her time wasn`t for long started a few weeks ago, and we knew it wouldn`t be long before we had to say goodbye to our beloved little kitty girl. We would sometimes, in a way of laughing at the culture, and yup, making fun of the culture, call me Carlie`s "kitty-daddy", and we both loved this little cat with all our hearts, and she was our family. But the last few weeks, she lost interest in food, and eventually, even in water, and she was so thin, it was painful to watch her try to walk once it became obviously painful that she was shutting down, then as things began to shut down, my wife made that painful declaration this morning that, : "It is time".
I know there are angels in Heaven, and people are made in the Image of God, not animals, but I hope, and I have to think that the Lord has a special place as well for these wonderful, sweet creatures that bring such joy into our lives, in return for just a little cat chow, or just a few dog treats. They become our family. They occupy a special place in our hearts, in our lives, and in our memories once they`re gone, and all of this for just a little love, a little kindness, and they are as dependent on us as any one person or creature could be, and their devotion, their forgiveness, their loyalty is as legendary as it is incredible.
Thank you for indulging me, thank you for allowing me a place to pay tribute to a very special friend I`ve just lost, thank you for letting me bare my aching soul and wounded heart, because, We said goodbye to Carlie today...
