I hate ground squirrels more than I used to. I have three that I'd like to whack, but gave away my air rifle several years back. This is why I need a hunting buddy for my 1.00 acre.
I set a rat trap in the spring, but whacked a little squirrel(Harvey) that had recently left the nest. I was upstairs looking out a window to see if I'd caught one yet, when I saw Harvey approaching the trap. I banged on the widow and yelled at him, but he didn't run away. I went to a closer window and did the same, but the fresh allure of Jiffy peanut butter was more than he could resist. I could relate.
Carrying this pandemic excess, I still somehow managed to briskly maneuver down the stairs and outside without passing out; however, Harvey got whacked. He wasn't in the trap, but was badly injured. I thought for sure he was going to die. I ached inside.
Never experiencing anything but a watering mouth for the tasty tree chickens, I was caught by surprise a bit at the agonizing grief. With fear of getting bitten, I resisted picking him up for a minute. Prayer didn't immediately revive him, so I cradled the little critter like a new born baby. Only Jon Snow would pray for a squirrel.
He couldn't use his front legs at first. His attempts to escape yielded a small circle back where he started. I bottle fed him, then started therapy after a few days. Six weeks removed, that fella had made a full recovery. Nursing the little rascal and him sleeping on my belly for weeks produced a strong case Nightingale Syndrome. I now feed Harvey, birds, a wild rabbit, the cutest gray squirrel that I've ever seen, and three pesky ground squirrels ...nuff said.

Is Harvey his first or last name? LOL, it's his only name, like Madona or Cher. I named him Harvey after the imaginary rabbit in the James Stewart movie Harvey. I didn't figure anyone would believe I had a squirrel sleeping on my belly.

My wife does that from time to time but not with squirrels. She raised 7 baby opossums, 2 baby ground hogs (why I don't know) and 4 baby coons all on a bottle until they were old enough to go on their own. She wanted to nurse a baby skunk and I said NO YOUR NOT EITHER 😂.

Red Fox Squirrel, as a kid growing up had 2 of those for pets after they fell out of a tree as pups.
I raised them till the fall of that year and then released them because they started sharpening their teeth on the legs of our furniture.

He was so cute. I let him go when he wanted to run from me. I'd still catch him, but figured he was ready to leave my belly. He's doing good out there now, and has a girlfriend.

Harvey and the cooler:
I have a dog bowl of water out for the critters, birds, crickets, squirrels and the rabbit drink from it. One day, I watched Harvey take one quick sip from the bowl then head over to the cooler. The cooler is tall proportional to a big coke can. My wife was using it to water her tomatoes with rain water.
That boy hopped up on that cooler and hung upside down to get a drink with his back feet clinging to the top edge of the cooler. He preferred the rain water to my clean filter water.
I put that bowl out there when I first let him go. He had very recently left the nest when he got whack in the trap. I gave him water from a bottle until I let him go. There must be something instinctive in them to prefer or need unpurified water???
