Where were you hunting this early in the year? Where you way up north in Canada or still in Indiana. Nice looking lab. They are beautiful dogs. I've not been out waterfowl hunting in quite some years. There is nothing like rowing out to the duck blind and then setting in the blind soaking wet while freezing to death. Then the Sun comes up and the birds start flying. You start shooting and the cold just goes away when that first goose folds his wing after you fill him with some #4 lead shot. Yea back then we used Lead Shot. I've not been waterfowl hunting since they banned lead shot. We would all three fire shots at nearly the same time and then we would all say that we were the one that hit the goose and this was my goose. ha ha . I hunted with my next door neighbor and his brothers. We went down to Hovey Lake in Posey County and had to sign up for the draw. 30 or 40 different guys would show up and be in the HQ building at 3:30 am waiting to see if they got a draw to hunt that day. And parties of 3 got priority over parties of 2 or less. You might as well forget hunting if you didn't have three guys in your party for the draw. These days we can use our own boat and motor to get out to the blind. Back in the 1970s' we had to use one of the DNR boats and all they had was oars. Thus I got picked to row out in the morning. The smart guys chose to row back and then get into a warm truck for the drive home. After the first time I refuse to be the one rowing out to the blind and made one of the other guys row the boat out and get all sweaty.

Budd lives and hunts in Minnesota up near the Boundry Waters or in other words GOD'S COUNTRY.
