I got this for the kids when they were smaller and the weight of the ML barrels made it tough for them to shoot well after holding the rifle up for a minute. Skinny li'l 12 yr old arms can't hold that much weight too long if the deer do not cooperate. Whenever the kids are not going or do not use it I use it myself. I like the ease of handling with the shorter barrel. T/C Encore with 18" Bullberry 209x50 with a Bullberry's Woodsmith custom stockset on it. This is the only ML we have with a scope on it.

Doesn't shortening the barrel also increase the recoil ? BTW , love the bench , do you have a pattern for making one that you could post or a link to one ?

I really like the bench too...looks like it is one piece of plywood with very few fasteners, and breaks down easily. Would love to see some plans if you have them singleshooter. PS - Do you own stock in TC??? ;D Just ribbing you a bit. Bought an Omega last year, and absolutely LOVE it.

You have some great gun setups! Good stuff man. If I had the property I would put in a few of those benches as well.

The bench is made from a single sheet of oak laminate plywood. I saw a picnic table made like this so a buddy and I set out to make a shooting bench one Saturday and this is what we got.
The only plan or pattern I have is a luan template I lay on the plywood to draw the lines so I get it right.
There are no fasteners or clamps - it is all posts and slots and the whole thing just slips together. I redesigned it to make it ambidextrous also, just have to move 2 pieces on the seat and flip the top over and it is done.
I could take some pix of the basic parts and let you guys take it from there if you like. My buddy was selling them complete and delivered for $125 locally, but that didn't go over too well. I think he was overpriced, but that was due to the oak plywood. I am sure that he would be willing to make more again if asked to, just have to go with cheaper regular old plywood.

By the way, jstalljon, I should own stock in T/C. I started when I wanted an Encore in .308 and the wife bought it for me for my birthday, then got me a Burris 3-9x scope for it for Faher's Day.
Nobody liked the recoil and the BIG bang of the .308, so I had it all to myself. But, a guy at work needed the cash and sold me another Encore in a ML rifle and the wife loved shooting it. And then the kids loved shooting it. So every time we went hunting I would go to grab my ML and someone else would already have it and leave me with a shotgun or my pistol. So, I just kept buying them until there was enough that everyone would leave mine alone. That took 5 Encore rifles and the one pistol. I also now own 2 Contenders, and one is the wife's. Okay...I admit it... I have a problem.
And as far as recoil goes, the shorter barrel is not much different, but it is set for only a 180 grain XTP over 90 grains of 777. 90 grains is not much kick at all. It really shines when I hunt the cattail swamp I like so much. So much easier to maneuver when stalking.

How much did the barrel run? Can you get it in stainless?
What is effective range with the shorter barrel?

You can have them in stainless. Can't tell you the cost. I traded for it. I got a Remington Model-7 in .223 for $200 at a gun show and the owner had an employee who wanted one for his wife, so we did a trade. I paid extra for the stocks.
Go to bullberry.com and see for yourself. There's a couple 18" barrels on the site now for a discounted price.
They have an accuracy guarantee. I have not shot the shortie over 100 yards since we use it primarily at close range and for practice. As I said, I was using 60 grains of 777 and have now gone to 90 grains. It is as accurate as I can get it to be, is all I can say. I just know that if it is within 100 yards and I put the crosshairs on the target...I hit it.

I have 5 Encoes - al with ML barrels. Also have one set up as a pistol with a stainless .243 1" full bull barrel. Also got the wife a Contender I am working on now. All stainless with a stainless scope and hoping to get a set of the blue/black laminate grips from Georgia Jim as well as having the scope, base and rings anodized a brilliant blue to match the grips. All I have special on the current guns is my rifle stock. I engraved it with this scene a couple years ago so the wife and kids would know which one to leave alone.

I need to get a better camera or learn to take better pix - these just do not show how detailed the engraving really is.
