Howdy all. I'm new to the area, as well as new to hunting really. I used to hunt with my grandpa when I was a kid, but it's been at least 15 years since I've been in the field. So any tips on hunting or good public places near me would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Depends how far you want to drive. There are some nice deer killed out of Crosley every year.

Welcome! I used to live near Elizabethtown, on the Bartholomew/Jennings County Line...but that was before I started hunting.

Lot's of good resources both here and elsewhere. Don't worry about having the newest and best stuff. ( If you can, so much the better) Archery gear, for instance--older bows will kill deer all day long and are a lot cheaper. Since most newer accessories will fit older bows due to stadardization, spend your money there & perhaps on an extra treestand instead of a new bow. In terms of hunting deer, let the wind be your guide. Better off sitting on the ground with the right wind than in a spacious stand & a bad wind. If you are fortunate to get a good place to hunt, find out where they're going and where they are coming from and set between the two points, getting there as quietly as possible. It sounds simplistic I think sometimes we get away from these basics, to our detriment. I shoot the first set of backstaps to come down the trail, so I'm no trophy expert, but I bet I would get a few "amens" from the others here by saying if you want to see horns be in the woods as much as possible between Halloween and November tenth, give or take a day. Probably that first six days in November if you have to pick. I've rattled in a lot of deer but I use it sparingly before the rut, as I have noticed almost every deer that hears it circles downwind--even deer that were already coming to me, I suspect. I don't go anywhere in the rut without a "can" call. It doesn't always work but when it works it really works. Don't be afraid to hunt from the ground, even without a blind. In that case cover behind you is far more important in terms of hiding than cover in front. It's harder, but man is it cool! Above all, if the deer makes you happy and it's legal, drop it and to heck with other's opinions. Pack a headlamp in addition to your flashlight. Buy those arm-length gloves, you'll be glad you did. Some baby wipes are nice too when you need em. and an old walmart bag to transport trash back after you clean up. Good luck! God Bless! Take lots of pictures--you'll regret not doing so-- and share your success with us!
