Hi all, I’ve been confused by the extension of 2019 licenses announced by DNR related to the coronavirus. This is directly from the DNR website:
“All 2019-2020 basic hunting, basic fishing, hunt/fish combo, youth licenses and stamps set to expire March 31, 2020, are valid until Friday, May 22, 2020. Keep a printed or electronic copy with you while hunting/fishing.
If you do not have a valid 2019-2020 annual license or stamp, a new 2020-2021 annual license is required. For the 2020 spring wild turkey season, hunters need a 2020 spring turkey license and valid gamebird habitat stamp.”
My interpretation of this was that all 2019 stamps (which would include the game bird stamp required for turkey) are now valid until May 22, 2020. Which means for this season, I’d only need to purchase a new turkey license and not a new stamp.
However, that apparently is not the case. I just got off the phone with the DNR line, and they confirmed with someone that you must still purchase a new 2020 game bird stamp even if you bought one last year. Just thought I would share this information as I don’t read it that way based on what is posted online.

She put me on hold several times and kept checking with people. She finally came back and said it was stated wrong on the website. I told her if that’s the case they probably need to update it ASAP because the way it’s written it certainly could be interpreted differently. I sent a PM to that CO to see if he could clarify for me, thanks for the link.

Keywords are “valid gamebird habitat stamp.” So when do they actually expire?? I’m sure it’s just like anywhere else. Ask three different people and get three different answers. But the way it’s written. Game bird habitat stamp isn’t included for this year to turkey hunting. IMO.

It would have expired March 31 just like the licenses and would now be good through May 22.

I thought I read the game bird stamp was yearly. If you bought one in spring, it was good for fall turkey. But if you bought one in fall, it wasnt good for the next spring. Just talking out loud.
Lifetime license holder here, so I dont keep up much on license info anymore.

Right. If bought in fall it wouldn’t be good for the spring because it expires March 31, before spring season, just like the licenses.
I just double checked my licenses and the game bird stamp does say expires March 31.

Hey all, I wanted to provide this update after reaching out to the CO from this forum for clarification. Per him, the information I received over the phone yesterday IS NOT ACCURATE. According to him, the correct answer is if you purchased a game bird stamp in 2019, it is now good until May 22nd, 2020. Therefore, you will NOT need to purchase a new stamp, only the 2020 turkey license. I have posted his response and explanation below. Hope this helps clear up the confusion for everyone! I want to apologize for the confusion. The correct answer is....the 2019 game bird habitat stamp due to expire on March 31 has been extended to May 22, 2020. I will attempt to explain the different answers. It is the turkey license. An annual license is valid from April 1 to March 31. The same is true for stamps. However, a spring turkey license is valid for only the period of the spring turkey season, it doesn't expire March 31 but it expired the last day of spring turkey season last year. Therefore, the turkey license was not extended but the stamp was. Individuals who do not deal with this on a daily basis or are not directly involved with the process may get information turned around. Sometimes it is their mistake and sometimes it is the relay of information (the telephone game you played as a kid). I hope this clears everything up for you. If you have any addition questions, please let me know. Thanks

Even though it is extended, I will probably go ahead and get my daughter's new youth license right now anyway. No real reason not to, she'll still need it the rest of the year.
