I saw it's predecessor on a show about Roman field weapons, but the crossbow was considerably larger and didn't have to be cocked for each shot. The operator simply turned a large crank and a rather ingenious mechanism continuously cocked, reloaded, and fired the weapon. A "Gatling" xbow, if you will.
