I made my first trip to Bass Pro today. I was very impressed with the size of the store. Staff was more than friendly and always willing to answer questions. However, I was very unimpressed with the selection of rubber hunting boots. It shocked me to see how few options they had in the store. When I finally settled on a pair, they didn't have my size. No big deal.
My buddy and I decided to go ahead and eat there before we drove over to Cabela's (they have more rubber boot options). The restaurant was nice, clean and we'll staffed. Menu is small but, understandably so. My food arrived as ordered. However, I immediately spied a long head hair poking out underneath my bed of fries. Thankfully, the waitress was there to witness the discovery and notified the manager after she removed my plate. He came over immediately and offered apologies and offered a new meal. I accepted the new meal as well as his offer to take it off the tab. Ultimately, the food was good. I also had alligator bites. And I was not disappointed! I had never had alligator before and it really surprised me.
I really liked the GINORMOUS salt water aquarium. I took a ton of pics for my wife and I think I have her convinced to return with me up there.

I will hit both Cabela's in Hammond and the Bass Pro there in Portage, BP is 45 min away, Cablecast is another 1/2 hr further. I think the eatery in Cablecast is better than BP. Unfortunately since BP bought Cablecast the Hammond store has gone downhill tremendously - only carrying about 60% of the selection that they did before, and the people there are dumber than a box of rocks.
Now, if I need fishing gear I go to the Portage Bass Pro and if they don't have it I shop on-line. If I need hunting stuff, I go to Cabela's.
The Cabela's has a freshwater aquarium.

In Cincinnati Bass Pro is 3 to 4 times bigger than Cableas. I prefer Bass Pro except for clothing. Guns and hunting is Bass Pro. I guess it all depends per locations

I was in Cabela's with a buddy about 3 weeks ago. He was looking for a specific St. Croix spinning rod. We both looked in the rod rack and didn't see it. We asked the guy behind the counter if they had one and without making a step to come out from behind the counter or offering to look on the computer for in-store inventory his reply was "If you don't see it on the rack we don't have it."
We said thanks while muttering under our breath and walked out. You'd think for a close to $200 rod, he'd be more interested in helping to make a sale.

I live in Floyd Co and the FIL is in Lake Co, so I go to all four locations. The Clarksville BPS is only 10 minutes from the house, so I frequent it. I can't say much bad about it other than there never being enough staff at the check outs and how long it takes to actually pay for something. Interesting comment by Scott in the post above. I'm in the market for two particular St. Croix rods. They are out of stock and can't tell me when I can come back and purchase them. I'm buying with points, so another retailer is not an option. The main difference I have noticed since the consolidation is the absence of Meindl boots. No worries. I just order direct from Meindl USA. A clerk at BPS tried to sell me on their brand of boots when I complained about the lack of Meindl. I have bought AND returned BPS and Cabelas footwear in the past. Junk, in my opinion. The Louisville Cabelas is in one of the most congested parts of the entire metro-Louisville area. I will not go there unless on an early weekend morning. Nice store, but not worth the hassle. I like the Portage BPS and go there every time we visit. I find that it has a better selection of camping gear than Clarksville. I don't care for the Hammond Cabelas. No particular reason, I just don't find much there. There is a decent brewery across the street!
Sorry to ramble. Time to go tot the store and then get the boat ready. Hitting my favorite Crappie hole today and then a fry afterwards. Grilled burgers will be the back-up.

I went yesterday (Saturday 12p) parked in the front row got everything I wanted and checked right out without an issue. Not crowded at all traffic not a problem. In fact staff were very helpful.

Cabela`s over Bass Pro every time for me. It always seemed to me that Cabela`s product quality was better, and they stocked a better assortment of gear. Kinda like the difference between Galyan`s and Dicks.

The Hammond Cabela's is a nice store when compared to the Portage Bass Pro store, Cabela's is cleaner and seems to be stocked better. The Portage Bass Pro store is newer but needs a major cleaning both inside as well as outside. I personally dislike both stores and can find just about everything I need at either Wal-Mart or one of the Farm supply stores. The sad thing is the Bass Pros aquarium is terrible, the water is cloudy, and there is only a few small examples of different species of fish, The Hammond Cabela's aquarium is very nice in comparison. I for a long time had a Cabela's credit card but finally closed out the account because I could never find anything I wanted and never used my points. I just last week placed an order and used up the last of my gift cards that I got when I closed out my account 3 years ago.. I like ordering online because you can read reviews and you can get free shipping.

They are the same to me. I actually got burnt out by them when I went to buy a quart of 2 stroke oil and it was 2x the cost at cabelas vs walmart. I canceled my cabelas card as soon as I used the points and found a new card.
I am not a fan of the store brand clothes or merchandise either.
They do alright for a shopping trip with my wife once or twice a year.

When Bass pro shops opened and for about a year the Restaurant had almost a 2 hour waiting list . They gave you a beeper. They had Hickory smoked Chicken that was cooked right there . But with the constant changing of the menu and a few bad waitresses the restaurant started to go down. Plus the newness wore off .

With a credit card that pays $ back you can still purchase those same items but now you will get some $ back that you can spend anywhere.

I chose chase sapphire. It has been good. Use points to pay for airline tickets but could get money back, gift cards, shop online etc... no regrets.

I have the old, old style Cabelas points card. Only good for stuff purchased there. When BP bought them out, now the points are only good for 6 months on purchases, or you have to re-submit a request to BP to keep the points valid. I tried to use the points ($300 worth) earlier this year and was told that I couldn't. WTF??? That's when I found out about the new procedure. Even though I was over an hour away from home I left the items at the register I was so mad.
