WW - Evidently he was carrying his crossbow slung on his back with it cocked and loaded.. A No-No..
A Middleburg Heights (Ohio) man apparently was killed by his own crossbow as he was hunting in a woods in northern Ashland County.
The body of Michael Yankovitz, 31, was discovered by another hunter Sunday afternoon in a woods on Ruggles Township Road 1461. Yankovitz died from an arrow accidentally discharging from a crossbow he was carrying, piercing his back and neck.
Investigating the death were the Ashland County Coroner's and Sheriff's offices, Ohio Division of Wildlife officials and officers with the Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation.

That is sad. When I hunt the late season with my crossbow I always cock it at the truck, but it doesn't get loaded until I'm in the treestand. Walking out it stays unloaded. If I happen upon a deer that I want to shoot on the walk out(hasn't happened yet ) I'll take a chance on stopping and loading it up. My prayers for the family.

How awful.... I would never carry a loaded bolt with a crossbow. I never load mine at the truck, I wait until I get to the bottom of my stand, load it, hook it up face down and lift it up then put the bolt in once it is securly in the stand... I also ALWAYS take the bolt out when lowering the bow.. Just a sad sad thing to have happen to a fellow hunter..

How exactly did he shoot himself in the back and neck while carrying it? Was it slung on his back, bolt up or something? Too bad.
