After I stopped for some lunch in Kokomo today, I decided to check in at the Dunham's Sporting Goods store. I had heard that they had some deals on guns and figured I'd take a look. It was hard to see the tags on the guns behind the counter so I went to find help. I must have walked the store for 5 minutes looking for someone to help me. It was actually a little weird because I couldn't find a single employee. For a second, I looked around with a strange feeling like I might be on some hidden camera show! Since I really wasn't interested in purchasing a gun I decided to leave. On my way past the registers, a young man stood up from his crouched position behind the register. I think he looked as surprised to see me as I was to see him. He said he was the only one there! He looked like he could still be in High School. I made a few comments on my interest in a few rifles. He said that he had no clue about the guns and he didn't know how to do any of the paperwork if I wanted to buy one! He told me I should come back tomorrow and maybe somebody else could help me. Seemed pretty strange to me. I really felt sorry for the kid. That got me wondering if any of y'all have ever purchased a gun from Dunham's? Any similar experience? Maybe there are better locations?

I ended up buying one Thanksgiving week of 2018. Not because I needed a 308, but I got it for half price. Even with that sale going on, a manager (only one of the managers) had to be tracked down to open the gun cases and do paperwork. Nobody else had the knowledge/ability/keys/authorization to do so.
Now, are all locations like that? After reading your story, I believe it's possible.

Sounds about like the Bedford store. I haven't bought a gun there, quite a bit of ammo though.

Sounds like this must be pretty similar in all stores. The one in Columbus is about the same way. I had to walk around to find someone to help me at the gun counter, because it’s like there were no employees there. I rarely go in there, but they beat rural king by quite a bit on the gun I bought.

The Richmond store used to be that way. They have since moved locations and seemed to have improved. I bought a mossberg 500 with a field barrel and a rifled barrel for 299 back in 13.

They have always been lean on employees. I have had trouble buying cleats for my kids there.
However when looking at guns in Bedford I got lots of attention. Just walk behind the counter so you can see the price tag.
My favorite Duhnams experience came 20 yrs ago at the Anderson store. I was in the market for a 20 ga. And looking at autoloadwr the kid behind the counter was telling me I couldnt hunt with it. I tried to tell him otherwise and he got all kinds of bent out of shape. I laughed and walked on my way. He was yelling about his Grandpa told him so it was 100% fact. By that time I was irritated and humored which results in a smart alec response. Oh well.

My first time in the one at Columbus it was like a ghost town. Ive been back several times for random needs. It was better. Are all the Dunham's attached to a mall of some sort or are there any standalone stores?

I did wish I could’ve checked out their CVA Hunter 450 Bushmaster package. I wasn’t serious on a purchase, but that seems a fair deal for $250! Kind of curious as to the performance of the rifle. Anybody have an experience there?

I actually went there to get a .450, but ended up going with the Savage .350 legend.

My only experience with Dunhams was when I went in to buy a scope for a buddy for his new muzzleloader. On their front door was a sign advertising their price match guarantee. When I showed them the same scope for less at another retailer, they refused to price match because it was too cheap! I walked out and he had to order the scope from the other retailer.
I told them they needed to take their sign down and never darkened their door again.
Bad deal all the way around as his new Vortex only lasted 3 shots on his muzzleloader. He had to wait another 2 weeks to get the replacement back.

I went in there on Wednesday in Vincennes. I was looking for a new sweatshirt, best of my ability I believe there were only 3 people working then. And still had to wander around the hunting section for like 15 minutes before someone came out. On a side note they had a complete set of frog toggs. Top and bottom camo pattern for like $50, they seemed a little "chincy" so I passed. Does anyone use them? They just felt super thin to me and thought the first time a briar touches them they would be torn to shreds.

Many years ago, I bought a set of Frog Toggs for an Iron Butt Ride (endurance motorcycle, 1200 miles in 22 hours). The crotch and the arm pits ripped out on that single ride. Never bought another pair again. IMO, there are many much better "rain suits" on the market. Spend a little extra and you'll be happy you did. I'll get at least 10 years and many miles on a bike and hours on a boat from a set of TourMasters!

I have a set of Frog Toggs. I wouldn't think of using them for walking through any brush, nor using them in a monsoon, but for something that doesn't take up much room under the seat in the truck, and in a light to medium rainstorm, they work great.
