Had a great day Saturday. Went to my brother's place and first found some small Basswood trees for my bees. Marked them for this fall to remove and relocate. I checked the the two ladders and put up two stands. Then in the evening went fishing a caught a few bass and crappie, but only a few. Banks are loaded with small ones and biting was slow. Even the big plastic worm was slow.. Just getting away was the medicine I needed. Need to take more medicine in the near future.

Fishing Summit Lake for some bluegill today.
Had a little worm stealer nibbling at my worm then all of a sudden the bobber plunged. Set the hook and started reeling, finally caught sight of it and it was a big largemouth!
Fought it to within a couple feet of the dock and then he just let go....
Reel my line in and I still had a bluegill on my hook. Lol the bass had eaten the bluegill that took my worm...

I've always thought that was a pretty strerch of the river. Tall wooded hills on either side, river seems to get skinny there I'm sure the current is moving pretty good through there. Nice fish by the way.

Just got back from doing a little fishing at yellowwood with my wife. Ended up with 2 channel cats, a redear, and a painted turtle. Was just a real nice morning sitting on the dock casting a line.

Had something happen this morning while fishing I had never witnessed before. I was feeling in a small channel cat, about 10 inches, and a big bass chased it and tried to eat it two different times. I’ve had them do that while reeling in bluegills, but never a catfish. It was right next to the dock and it was a real decent sized bass.

Considering that I didn't bring the lading net to the pond, AND I didn't want to try to beach the cat, I stayed on the pier and grabbed it under a gill plate with one hand. I thought I had on a large Hybrid Striped Bass to tell you the truth. I thought all the Channel Cats were out of the pond. This one is about 11-12 years old. I clipped the adipose fin when I stocked the last batch and this one is clipped off.
The bass was easy in comparison.
FWIW, 8# test line.

I got some monster cats in my pond. How old can they get?

The only true way to tell how old they are is to take the ear bone or one of the fins that has the spine in it and cut it, then count the growth ring like in a tree. I've had one die in my pond from old age already, that was a few years ago. I believe their normal life span without predators is 15-20 years, but I'm not sure how many make it to that age.
Unless a person likes eating catfish, there is no biological reason to have them in the pond. They compete directly with bass for food once they get around 3# or larger, and since they get very large, they take up biomass that could be utilized by other fish.

Just a few pictures to show how much the lack of rainfall has affected my pond this year. May 30 September 1 That amazing. My brother's place in Switzerland county has been full and over flowing most of the summer. Most drop is 2 or 3 inches.
