I live in NE Illinois and do most of my bowfishing there. However, I have also bowfished for carp at the LaSalle Conservation Area, which is in Indiana just across the Illinois state line. Since bowfishing for trash fish using crossbows is legal in Illinois, that is what I use there since I don't have the strength to pull a hunting weight bow. Unfortunately, bowfishing in Indiana with crossbows is illegal, so I have to use my old target recurve bow that I have set up for bowfishing. I have heard that there are some changes in the works to the fishing regulations in Indiana. Does anyone know the reasoning behind the crossbow bowfishing ban in Indiana, and what it would take to change the law? There are way too many carp in the Kankakee River system, and bowfishing is a way to help the environment by removing them.

There are a few changes being made in the fishing regulations but I don't think they include trash fish.
The "reason" behind no crossbows is the same "reason" that we cant use them anywhere else except the archery deer season. The anti-crossbow people would just like to see all crossbows burned.
That is a shame as trash fish can be killed just about any which way anyone wants except we cant use crossbws.
Letters, emails and phone calls to the IDNR can maybe get a proposal like this in front of the NRC.
Let me know if I can help..

What would it take Woody? One lone distant voice in the wilderness from a foreign (non-voting, non-taxpayer) land would probably not avail much. Some sort of petition would probably be the best, but what kind of support (numbers) could be rallied for this cause and what chance do we have?

Let me work on it and I'll get back with you.
BTW - If you are willing to buy Indiana Non-resident tags the IDNR will listen to you.

Thanks Woody. I've been buying a 1-day non-resident fishing license when I go to LaSalle Conservation Area. A friend of mine at work says I'm paying them an exorbitant rate to do them a favor and remove trash fish, they should be paying me instead!
The situation in Illinois is similar, we can remove trash fish with just about any device ... except that we can use crossbows!
