I know a guy who has done that kind of work for years, but he`s slowed down, and doesn`t take work from anyone, but just a select few now. I`ve always loved his work, and he`s extremely reasonable. If someone wanted him to do some work, I would always ask him, but I don`t think he`s looking for clients.

I have smaller bucks mounted, one, just a little "basket 8-pointer", so I`m not solely about trophy bucks, but who wouldnt love to kill a huge bodied, big racked buck? He was 204 lbs. field dressed, just huge and gorgeous in every way.

I just read an article in the October issue of Deer and Deer Hunting, and I have no idea where he got this number, but the author said, if you multiply the weight of your field dressed deer times 1.3, it will give you an estimated live weight of that deer. I wasn`t surprised when I multiplied the weight of this buck field dressed, (204 ibs)x 1.3= 265.2 lbs. (estimated live weight).
He was a hog.

I've also heard that with hooved mammals, you usually yield about 1/3 live weight into boneless meat. All of this is rough approximation though.

The same D&DH article said that about 50% of a deer`s dressed weight would be boneless venison. So, not 50% of the live weight, but approximately 50% of the dressed weight. I still don`t know where this author got his numbers. I thought I had always heard that just a little less than half of the live weight ought to be what a hunter got in meat. But maybe 50% of the dressed weight would be about 1/3 of the live weight? Any math geniuses?

Brother and I never had a deer reach the floor when we hung it in the cooler. This one did and I had to cut off his legs at the knees.
