Hello,
Been looking at these two rifles in 450 BM for public land hunting, Mossberg Patriot and Ruger American. Finances dictate I need to kinda stay in this price range. Reading through online reviews sometimes I can't tell if it's an honest assessment or ad lol.. What I'm seeing is the Mossberg offers a nice walnut stock, good trigger, and longer barrel, while the Ruger feels a bit cheap with the synthetic stock but comes ahead in accuracy.
Anyone own either of these rifles, or better yet both, who can chime in with your experiences?
Thanks!

Between the 2 I'd lean towards the Mossberg. I have an ATR that's never given me any trouble, and usually shoots around an inch at 100 yards with most factory ammo I've tried.
The only trouble with the Ruger American I'm aware of is feeding from the detachable magazine. My BIL has one, and it seems to jam more often that it feeds successfully. It cost him an opportunity at a muley buck in Wyoming a couple years back. He now has to push up on the bottom of the magazine with one hand while cycling the bolt with the other for it to feed. Maybe a new magazine would fix it, I don't know.
I also like the looks of the stainless CVAs if you're interested in single-shots.

I would imagine either would serve you well. I will say that Ruger is known for good customer service. The only thing that draws my attention on both of them is the light weight. Both rifles weigh just a bit over six pounds and the .450 bushmaster is known as a thumper...
One choice that has been mentioned is CVA. I've seen a CVA Hunter .450 bushmaster single shot in a couple of the local Walmart stores for $226. It might be worth a look as you could buy that rifle and a decent scope for what the Ruger or Mossberg would cost you.
If you look up the weight on the CVA, it will say that it's 5.8 lbs, but my CVA scout in .44 mag was listed @ 5.8 lbs too, but it weighs right @ 7 lbs without a scope.

I also have a Ruger American 308 with a nice scope and shots well. The only thing is the barrel gets warm to hot if after a lot of fast shots.

Several buddies with the Ruger. Everybody is super happy with them, an astounded by the performance of the cartridge. Most deer were dead right there or close.
Just put together an AR in 450bm, so will follow up with the results later.

Wow thanks for the response and lots of really good info. I'm still a pretty noob hunter, only starting hunting squirrels last year after spending months trying to learn everything I could. Still excited for squirrel season coming up but looking for that first deer rifle. If only I could just have one of each haha. Doesn't really seem like there's a bad choice anyway, I'm hoping I can find either or both in stock locally where I can handle and get a feel for them. I'll have to look into the CVA's mentioned above as well. Thanks again.

I’m gonna go out on a limb and guess marlin’s is a little more expensive than what he’s looking to spend.

Marlin made a lever action 450 also! It is not Bushmaster but a .450 Marlin. Basicly a 45-70 with a modified case to enable higher pressure rounds.

I remember looking at those as well as Savage when I was looking at a 308. I recall some comments about folks having issues with rotary magazine of the Ruger. I was also looking for a wood stock - I am not a fan of synthetic stocks. I was also looking for a package (gun, scope, rings) - the ruger was roughly $100 over the mossy and savage and when it was all done and over with....I bought a Howa instead for $460 on-line + $20 FFL transfer. I am very happy with it and I love the Hogue overmolded stock. Look at sites like Grab-a-gun and have a dealer ready for an FFL transfer and save you some money!

That's cool to see an article like that, thanks for sharing. Been on baby watch and my son was born the 31st so I haven't made anymore headway in a purchase, but I'm going to pick up the Ruger American. No bad choices and I appreciate the replies, learned a bit too. I found one in stock locally and checked it out and decided to go for it. Might be a Boyd's stock in the future though haha.. Anyway hope to post some good groups or even better my first deer in the future. For now time to get ready for squirrels and scout out some good deer ground.

I have the Mossberg Patriot in .30-06 and I confess, I was completely taken aback at the quality for the price point. The Patriot's walnut stock is absolutely beautiful. The checkering is sharp and clean. The balance is excellent and accuracy is amazing.
I have found exactly nothing that I do not like about the Patriot. You will not be disappointed if the Patriot is your choice.

Don’t think you would be disappointed with either. There seems to be several solid choices in the entry level bolt gun field now. Sadly the one that would concern me the most at this point would be a Remington product
