I bought a half-dozen carbon composite bolts to hunt with this season. They seem to shoot well with practice points. My problem is my broad heads. I use the Bear razor head lights and they don't tighten up the same. This seems to keep them from grouping as well as they should. I know you can use a blow torch to heat an aluminum shaft and turn the insert so they are all on the same plane.
My question is can you heat a carbon composite shaft to turn the insert so all the broad heads are in the same plane so to speak?

My question is can you heat a carbon composite shaft to turn the insert so all the broad heads are in the same plane so to speak? Get an 8-32 (I think) three inch or so bolt with a nut on it. Screw that about an inch into the adapter. Then tighten the nut down onto it. Get a hold of the end of the bolt with a pair of pliars and start heating the bolt up with your torch. Do NOT apply the torch to the shaft at any time. As the heat is applied twist the shaft a little. When the glue is softened up enough the insert will move. Trial and error will get it located the way you want. I guess you could substitute and old Bear broadhead for the bolt. Just remember to keep the heat on the bolt or broadhead. Excessive heat will damage the shaft.

Woody, it worked like a charm. ;D I done it a bit different though. I used a practice point instead of the bolt you mentioned. First I used a marker to put a mark where the blade was sitting before I un-screwed the broad head and another on the shaft where it should have been. I then screwed the practice points in the shafts and used a blow torch to heat the point. Then I used a pair of vice grips to move the point/insert when it was hot enough to soften the glue. I didn't get to try them out however as it got dark. I will give them a try tomorrow. I do know they group well if I use the same bolt, but all the heads were setting at all different ways.........until now. BTW. My son saw a 12 pointer today (where I have permission to hunt this fall ;D) and another smaller buck (around 8 to 6 point) leading him. If those bolts fly the way I think they will I am ready for October 1st.

That will work too.
Good deal.
Hope they fly well for you.
If not look at Wasp SST Hammers..

I think they will do fine Woody. If not I'll check out the hammers.

Update on the bolts after Woody told me how to soften the glue on the composite carbons. Now all the broad heads are setting on the same plane so to speak. They shoot wonderful to say the least. All the way out to 50 yards they group like a dream. Even at 50 yards I don't dare shoot at the same bullseye twice! My groups are well within 2 inches for 3 shots. (using different bullseye and measuring each one). I am ready for October 1 st. ;D

Yes I did get up early this morning. It used to be normal for me, but when your wife works second it is a bit hard to get in bed early. Thanks to you and Woody for all your help. I think I am really going to enjoy bow season now. ;D

Doug, Thank your DNR and legislators. They did the work and gave you the season. Us computer crossbow guys just gave a little personal knowledge. Happy Hunting. Kansas

Kansas Kansas, I know they (DNR) were the ones which gave us the season, but if it wasn't for you and Woody I wouldn't have known which bow to buy nor how to turn my broad heads on the carbon shafts. ;D Remember up until this year crossbows were almost taboo here in Virginia.

I didn't think it mattered to have the blades lined up with the vanes...

He needed to turn the inserts to true them with the shaft. Fixed blades on short arrows tend to be a little tricky. Kansas
