www.in.gov/dnr/fishwild/5427.htmLooks like you'll have to drive a bit to any public ground. Owen-Putnam SF is nice, looks like it's about an hour from you. We've had several H-I squirrel hunts there. Like most of the state, you'll probably need to know somebody that has land or have money for a lease if you want to hunt private. Knocking on a few dozen doors may work also. Another option is to load up the car go further south on the weekends, there are a lot of nice public areas in the southern 1/3 of the state.

No public ground that I'm aware of around there that's open to hunting. Even finding private land to lease or get permission on is pretty unlikely as well given the suburban sprawl.
Closest public huntable land that I know of is Morgan Monroe state forest.

As much as I hate to say it....your in for a big surprise. Indiana is VERY different than Idaho. We have far less public ground... I recall some numbers where Idaho was in the top 5 states across the country for public access land....where Indiana is 95% privately owned. As such your going to find yourself in a battle for access in many cases...be prepare to hear "NO"...a lot. Whitetail is also the only large game animal we have....(no bears, lions, elk or mule deer) so people guard their deer hunting ground very closely. Many times access is limited to close friends or relatives. You will also find that tracts of ground here are much smaller vs what you may have seen out west. Leasing is a growing option here. Indiana doesn't have many "hunt clubs" like you will see in the Southeast and we don't have many high fence hunting opportunities either - if your into that sort of thing. The one thing that may help you is that if you are used to diving deep into public ground, it may help you get away from the crowds on the public ground here. Most won't stray more than a mile from a road. You will also find that central Indiana is pretty flat and pretty much ag fields, southern IN gets rougher and thus not as much farming and more widespread areas of hardwood forest. Deer season here is roughly 3 months long and you can only take a single antlered deer. In my opinion November is the month to be in the woods. Our general firearms season is roughly the last 2 full weeks in November, with a 2 week muzzleloader season to follow....bow is 3 months straight overlapping all gun seasons. Traditionally speaking deer hunting here is done by stand hunting. We typically don't use dogs or spot and stalk or track deer or even do many deer drives....the smaller tracts limit the ability to do that on private ground. Most of it is sit and wait. like I said....VERY different than what you may be used to.

JBird pretty much gave you a great primer on hunting in Indiana. Not much I can add because he is spot on. One thing I could add is you've come to the right place looking for some help. Lots of good guys here always looking to help each other out. Welcome to Indiana...it won't be long and you'll be ready to head back to Idaho.
