Actually, it is a VERY good write!!!!!
You wont find very many outdoor writers slamming crossbows these days, crossbow hunters spend money and buy magazines too!
As the crosbow ranks swell, you will find more and more pro crossbow article's out there.

Good articke and I hope they are here to stay to. Been out shooting my Horton Explorer today and I simply love the way this thing shoots.
Now the deer can hang up behind a tree as long as they want to. ;D

Reads like a crossbow promo to me. I didn't learn much about crossbows, how they work or what they are good for.
I did get the impression he would fall in to the category of hunters who want to hunt in the early archery season but he doesn't want to use the proper equipment Indiana has established as legal equipment for hunting deer during that time. Unless a person is handicapped of course.
Seems like it would belong more the more political campfire section, unless you feel it wouldn't hold up under scrutiny.

I thought it was very informative.
What you have is a SEASONED archery hunter attempting to take big game with a piece of archery equipment that he is not very familiar with.....trying "new" things is what "helps" this sport survive. Where would the archery world be today if we did not not have all of these advancements?

I have known C.J. for a decade or so and I assure you that he already does hunt in the early archery season. He is an accomplished vertical archer and bowhunter that does much better than most at harvesting whitetails. As a whitetail biologist, his understanding of the critter is or should be enviable by most other hunters. As a regular contributor for Bowhunter magazine he has rubbed shoulders and hunted with some of the biggest names in our industry. The article that he wrote was a landmark from the standpoint that one of the sharpest minds in our sport. He analyzed the crossbow, not only on the range, but in the field during actual whitetail hunts and published what he found to be fact.
Because of his association with what some would consider to be the leaders of anti-crossbow camp, he exposé was not only revealing, but it was also extremely courageous on his part. He stood up for what he believes and spoke his mind going against what most of his peers feel and believe. You can whitewash that any way you want, but when it comes to integrity and character, please don’t sell C. J. Winand short. He is a man among men!

DJH:
I couldn't have said it better, I have known CJ for over a decade and have had him as a guest in my home meny times. His reporting is that of a non objective person and a biologist. His opinion is just that, one mans opnion.
What is truely sad is that some folks want to use friendship to drive a wedge between hunters.
The only issue here in Indiana is ............ Do HOOSIERS want crossbow in early archery season.
Should HOOSIER hunters not make that decision?

His opinion is just that, one mans opnion. What is truely sad is that some folks want to use friendship to drive a wedge between hunters. The only issue here in Indiana is ............ Do HOOSIERS want crossbow in early archery season. Should HOOSIER hunters not make that decision? I'm not looking to pick a fight here Joe, But that last sentence is exactly what many of us have asked about the OBR. "Shouldn't Hoosier hunters make that decision"? I don't recall ANYONE asking my opinion on that issue. As a matter of fact, I don't know ANYONE who was asked about it. And yes, I know what you meant about "Hoosier Hunters" making the decision. ALL HOOSIERS should be included in the decision, not just the ones who are able to attend meetings, or have access to legislators. This is the same argument I experienced from some when I bought an inline ML. You had ML groups in Colorado wanting, and getting muzzleloaders banned. The result we are seeing is exactly what's happening in politics. There is no true representation anymore. It's all scratch my back, and I'll scratch yours. Arm twisting, MONEY, etc... Important matters confronting the IDNR such as the OBR, or even crossbows in early archery, among many, should be voted on by ALL licensed hunters in the state. That is the ONLY way that one group will have no advantage over another. After all the game in Indiana belongs to ALL of us. I love to bow hunt, and unless a crossbow hunter runs in front of me while I'm about to trigger my release, it makes absolutely no difference if HE chooses to hunt with a crossbow. Again, I'm not attempting to pick a fight with you Joe, just voicing my opinion on these two issues. Have a good one, wish I could have been there with you in Colorado, nice view.

The article entitled - "The Crossbow Is Here To Stay!" by C.J. Winand has been pulled from this URL and is now featured in this month's Buckmaster magazine. I understand that the Pope and Young club wasn't too happy with the article and C.J. has been dropped from the P & Y Conservation Committee where he has served well for a number of years.. That is their loss.. Here is C.J.'s biography.... residents.bowhunting.net/tcba/indexpg4.htm
