Think about it. If you shoot a deer with a crossbow, you have the same problem you face with other bows -- the deer rarely falls on the spot. It runs off, and you have to wait to be sure it's dead before you try to find it. If you start to track too quickly, odds are it will get up and run off again, increasing the time it takes to recover it. So put yourself in the shoes of a poacher for a moment. Do you shoot a deer with a crossbow, hang around in your truck for an hour or so before you start tracking, and then spend another 30 minutes looking for it, all the while worrying that you might see the lights of a conservation officer's truck coming toward you? Or do you shoot the deer in the head with a .22 magnum, drop it on the spot, throw it in the back of the truck, and be gone in 30 seconds? As the kids say, duh! www.freep.com/sports/outdoors/outcol22_20010322.htm

While I am sure that some deer have been poached with a crossbow you are right most all poachers use a gun and I would bet a 22 LR would be used a lot. The Magnum will certainly do the job and it does not have to be in the head either but it is a bit noisy compared to the 22 lr. The 22lr has been known as that poachers gun of choice for years. No need to really poach these days with all the deer around and the liberal tags but I suppose some still do it for what ever reason. I think that anti crossbow folks like to throw that out just to villify the crossbow more. Jim

I'll post the data later but in Ohio they found that game infractions (including poaching) was more common among the vetrical bowbenders.
Both methods hardly make a speck on the poacing chart.
Poachers use the most effificient and QUICK method they can, not one that they have to blood trail an animal.

Woody, I'll beat you to it. This is from Ohio.
During a five-year period in the 1990’s, 633 hunting implements used during the commission of wildlife violations were seized by wildlife officers in Ohio. Firearms accounted for 95% (602); vertical bows accounted for 2.7% (17); and crossbows accounted for 2.2% (14).
Looks to me that bow guys are causing more trouble then Crossbow guys.

Kansas Yep...that is it.. Thanks for posting it up. Considering that 58% of the bowhunters in Ohio use crossbows makes that stat even more widespread. BUT - Both together hardly show on the radar screen for poaching..

Not trying to cause a stink here, but I thought you wanted this section for the equipment and hunting with them etc. If a known anti crossbower posted this wouldn't it be shot down and told to move to another section?

I can see your perspective on this and this is the reason it is allowed.. "This forum is for crossbowers to share information and tips about crossbows and hunting. It is NOT a place for anti-crossbowers to bash crossbows. Any debating of legalization of crossbows will be removed and put into “The Campfire”. ' It's a fine line to walk as to what is discussing "information" and what is bashing of equipment. I think this one falls under "informaton" in trying to dispell an untrue myth about crossbows. It is undoubtedly a judgement call that I will try and make in all honesty... I don't think we should allow the bashing of any legal equipment or the people that shoot it no matter which forum it is in. Thanks for your input..

No problem, I was just curious. This was one of the issues that a few folks use for "bait" on the old site (on both sides of the issue). It got old and I would hate for that to happen here. Nice to have an admin who actually replies!
