Does anyone have any experience with competitive pistol shooting?
I'm curious about it but can't find much info.

I shot action pistol but that was mid 80’s to early 90’s. I know a few of the ranges are gone now; including the one where the State Championship was held.

I shot NRA bullseye pistol comp. I am going to shoot an outdoor league this summer. To start you can just shoot .22, centerfire or .45. A decent spotting scope and a box/bag to haul it in are about all you need. Outdoor matches are shot slow fire, 10 shots in 10 minutes at fifty yards. Timed fire 2 5 shot strings in 20 seconds each at 25 yards. Rapid fire is 2 5 shot strings in 10 seconds each at 25 yards. You can use a revolver or semi-auto but most use autos. Most shoot standard velocity .22 and light/target centerfire and .45. The Ruger .22 and a 1911 .45 will do to start. Iron sites or optics are permitted. I have seen Buckmarks, Hi-starnards, S&W 41, Hammerli's you name it shot. Center fire most go with some variation of the 1911 but again there are several makes on the line. I think the minimun for centerfire is the .32 S&W Long. One guy used a K22, a K38 and a 1955 .45 and did very well. The NRA Site has info including rules.

I picked up a .22 LR High Standard from a guy that has an Aimpoint on it. Both are 1968 vintage. He said he won a lot of shoots with it. It is VERY accurate, more so than I am. From a rest using run of the mill CCI Blazer bulk pack I could hit an 8" paper plate at 100 yds more times than not.
