About 3 weeks ago when there was ice on the pond (come to think, it was longer ago than that, it was during the last COLD snap, so 6-8 weeks?) I had a flock of redheads on the pond.
For the past week I've seen something floating in the pond, right where I have some PVC cover for the fish.
From shore, it looked like a dead duck. WTH?? With the wind it should have floated to shore. A lot of casts with the rod/reel/lure and a drake redhead came in. He had a 1/4 oz. ball head jig with a curly tail grub stuck in his wing, and he was trailing about 4' of mono. He must have gotten the mono tied up around the PVC cover in the pond and drowned.
That's why one of the rules at the pond is any fishing line that gets cut off of the rod goes home with you, it isn't left there.
How the heck the jig got stuck in him I have no idea. To my knowledge they were only at my pond for less than a day.

If I had to guess he was probably diving for invertebrates on or around your pvc structure. He most likely got caught on the jig head that was broke off on your pvc structure and was held down and drowned. Sorry for the bad luck. They are beautiful birds.

I think he was carrying the jighead and line when he landed on the pond - it's not a type that I use.
