I've been playing around with bolt / arrow and broadhead combinations for about three months. I finaly got everything flying real good . I ended up with about 420 grains . My question is.... How universal is my set-up ? I know I'm good on deer and the like . How about black bear , elk , wild boar or even moose? I've bowhunted with compounds for a long time and know how to set-up for different game . I know a x-bow spends the kinetic energy pretty quick past 30yds thats the reasoning for these questions . I'm shooting that weight at over 310 fps . Not a Excal bow .... its a Parker.
I know a lot of ya'll are from the Excal site and have a little more oppertunity at bigger game than us Kentucky boys . Just wanting opinions.

JD,
I shoot 420 grain arrows out of my TenPoint QX4 at 313 fps so we are right in teh same ballpark.
That is mucho KE and the shorter arrow doesn't dump it that fast at longer yardages.
I have no qualms about shooting an unlalert, stationary good angled deer or any other animal at 40 yards.
I am still way into overkill with KE at that distance.
The Canadians can fill you in on the moose..They kill them with a lot less...

I shoot a 20" long 435 gr Beman Thunderbolt out of my Excal Paradox with 125 gr Slick Trick broadhead and 320 fps, which should bring down any game in North America. For deer I like my Vixen with Gold Tip Laser lls at 18" long 325 gr with 100 gr ST up front and 290 fps.

Woody :
I shoot a single red dot and have zeroed my x-bow at 30 yds . I'm am about 1 1/2 " high at 20 yds and not a whole lot higher at 10 yds . However 40yds is a different story . I'm a good 6" low . I'm pretty agreeable that its still packin the punch at those distances but it sure seems to be spending it quicker with the shorter bolt as in comparison with traditional archery equipment .
I used to shoot a single pin on my compounds .... I would zero at 25yds and adjust a little for closer or further shots . I impose a 25yd limit with my compound and it just took the guess work or chance of confusement out of the equation . My x-bow is not much different but I do admit I'm real comfortable at 30yds . As far as other game goes , I've bowhunted other states for whitetails and I know I got those animals covered . I kinda backed out of a bowhunt this year for black bear in Ontario and if I decide to book for next year I'm limited to x-bow . I was also toying around with the idea of russian boar in Crossville , Tenn. as a hunt thats closer to home and not real exspensive . I threw in moose and elk as wishfull thinking .
So if any of you guys have hunted these animals I'm curious to your set-up .

I am shooting a 400 gr, Gold tip Ls. 11 and sometimes bump up to 125 gr. head for 425 gr. shooting out of an Exo mag. for Bear and Deer .They don't stand a chance at 30 yds. As for Moose I would take them to just as easy, however I don't because getting a Tag for adult Moose is to hard applying as an Individual.

I forgot to mention it's a "200 lb." Exomag. Not the older 185 lb.

JD, When I shot and hunted with my last compound - an XI Legacy set at 72 pounds and shooting 2413s I used one pin. It was set dead on at 25 yards. It was hold low at 20 and in, dead on at 25 yards, a tad high at 30, top of the back at 35 and at 40 he walked.. If you haven't seen it there is a pretty good KE, velocity and trajaectory program here.. home.att.net/~sajackson/archery.html

I've used that site quite often the past couple of years and highly reccomend it also . As compounds seemed to change technology about as fast as computers , I got the bug to work on my own equipment . That worked good so I started tweaking set-ups . Theres not a whole lot that I have'nt delt with on compounds . I gota buddy who is a certified archery tech and he has showed me alot especially on string and cable systems . I know its probably the next best thing but I kinda miss those teardrops that let anyone change strings .
As far as crossbows ..... I'm hooked . I've found that the little things will make all the difference in good broadhead flight . This will be my first time using one during our archery deer season. I learned a little during spring turkey . Just going to take me awhile to get up to speed . Thanks for everyones input .
