Anybody shoot a deer with a 357 Maximum this year? What load did you use and how did it perform? Just bought one for my daughter and starting to research a good load.

My gun has taken a ton of deer. It got passed around to several over the years, including my 3 god-children and their dad. It is a great round, can be loaded from mild to wild. I use a 200ftx with a max charge of AA1680. I had the throat cut very long so I could seat the bullet long and use all the powder space available. If you had a standard 357mag chamber reamed to the max, you may have to seat the bullets conventionally. A 180ssp or 180xtp over 22-26gr AA1680 is a great load. Also a 158xtp flat point over 22-24gr H110 is hard to beat.

My Max has taken maybe a half dozen deer between the 2 of us. Don’t use it anymore now that we can use HPR’s. I load a 180gr SSP with a healthy charge of H110. It is running 2130fps. I have several boxes of the SSP’s still; very sad they discontinued them. None of the deer went far

I would love to use a .357 maxi, but for now I just use my Marlin lever action in .357 magnum. If you don't find a maxi round you like, I use the flat nose 180 gr .357 magnum buffalo bore rounds. Buffalo Bore uses a proprietary powder that really steps up the energy over the standard .357 mag. It has a healthy 1,850 fps muzzle velocity out of the 18.5 in barrel. I prefer the flat nose over the hollow point so the round can better bust through bone.

POC hunts with one. Rolls his own for it too. Maybe he'll eventually chime in here.

Complete passthroughs and great blood trails since making the switch and none have made it more than 30 yards.

I used IMR 4227 and a 180 grain Hornady XTP. I gave up on that round years ago, shot a lot of deer with, just had other calibers I prefered.

I had a big doe go about 100 yds once, but there was no problem following her blood trail. I took my wife with me and this is how it went: Me: She ran from the field into the scrub, so we'll just pick up her blood trail at the edge of the scrub. Wife: OK Me (with flashlight in hand): Blood ... blood ... blood ... blood ... blood Wife: This is no fun, I want to find some blood! Me: OK, you take the lead. Wife: Blood, blood ... there she is! I want credit for finding her!
