The possibility that jumps out to me is that the dog mentioned did more than just knock the gun to the ground.
It's possible, of course, that the gun might be poorly designed in a way that makes it capable of discharge by being knocked to the ground from a position leaning against the wall. And that would likely be even more possible if the safety was not engaged while the gun was leaning against that wall.
But the gun is a Browning, and they are typically well designed, and the hunters were experienced shotgunners who would be expected to put their gun on safety immediately after any shot opportunities were done, and certainly before leaving it leaning against a wall.
I suspect there's a strong possibility that the dog stepped on the gun,s receiver as it was on the floor/ground, and stepped on the safety at the same time, pulling the trigger as it proceeded forwards, probably with the same swipe of a big wet paw.
This has happened a surprising number of times either in blinds or boats over the years, yet seems to take many by surprise each time.
The tang safety position is a definite safety feature that IMO should be given more consideration when buying a shotgun that may be used for waterfowling where a dog may be involved. I never did any waterfowling with a dog myself, but I always preferred the tang safety anyway, as it just felt mote natural for me. But if your preferred brand doesn't have a tang safety, the possibility of your dog shooting you can be minimized by just shucking the shell chamber to leave it empty whenever the gun is temporarily to be out your hands as while moving boat locations or taking a break. Some extra trouble to prevent a very unlikely accident, but probably still easier than training a lab to be more careful in his foot placement while he scrambles out of the blind or boat.
As someone on here pointed out the last time we were talking about a similar incident, if the dog manages to jack another shell into the chamber before shooting you....it was no accident.
