So I would like to join the band of crazies that call themselves waterfowl hunters--I guess I love terrible weather and hate my wallet.
Right now, I've got a trusty 870 that I don't care about getting wet and a 12 foot Perception Pescador Pro kayak in moss-green camo. I do not have hunting access to any wetland areas and, being in Hamilton County, there is not much public land except for Wilbur Wright and Providence Pond (the latter of which is the only opportunity for waterfowl and is draw-only, VERY hard to get drawn). I fish the White River all the time and know that navigable waterways and their beds are held in the public trust up to the ordinary high water mark. Additionally, one could float on a connected stream that has NOT been deemed navigable, but they could NOT step foot on the bed as the riverbed remains in private ownership.
Obviously one has to remain cognizant of local ordinances and rules in regards to gunfire, etc. Who would be the appropriate authority to reach out to--DNR, or the Hamilton County Police? Considering that I am trying to hunt the north side of Indy, I imagine I'll "get to say good morning" to a number of PO'd yuppies and want to be prepared to cite legal authority. Anyone have any thoughts/advice?
I should also note that I'll be float hunting--I know that is less-than-respectable for a lot of bona fide waterfowlers but I'm just trying to knock number one down, not call in a flock of pintails to a spread and triple limit. If anyone has suggestions for # or type of decoys that I should feasibly get, whether a $60 dollar call is distinguishable from a $20 call in the hands of a beginner, DEFINITELY looking for waders advice, etc. I'm all ears!
