I finally get to hunt deer and not ducks in a different state. Having said that I work for the department of fish and game here in Alabama and I have talked to most of the biologist. I am trying to get an outlook from people in the area. I am coming up early Nov. to hopefully hunt Hovey, Sugar Ridge, Hoosier, or Fairbanks. I understand that Hovey is poorly managed, Sugar Ridge is hard to hunt, Hoosier is a lot of land and Fairbanks gets over hunted due to being close to Terre Haute. Iv never bow hunted out of state and I am coming to scout for a day and hunt the next 6. Can anyone offer and help or advice on general areas to hunt. PM me if possible and thanks for the help in advance!

Some of the best public land hunting here is probably in the very southern part of the state. I'd use the DNR "Where to Hunt" interactive map, have a dozen different spots within maybe a 1 hr radius picked out from the aerial imagery, then spend all of your scouting day checking each one by one for sign, hunting pressure, etc.
I'd try to time it where my scouting day is on a weekend to see what is getting hit by other hunters, then have most of your hunt days fall through the week. There are plenty of spots that don't get hit hard during bow season, so if there are people hunting it just go on to your next spot.
In November, I'd bring a comfortable stand and plan on sitting all day. Bring lots of layers in case of colder weather.

When do you think you will be up in early November? You mentioned Sugar Ridge, which puts you less than 3 miles from Pike State Forest. I live less than 4 miles from Sugar Ridge and a mile from State Forest. You planning on using a camper, tent or motel? Drop me a line on here, I may be able to help you out.
